I do give her as much as she wants at night, she only ever eats maybe two sections but I put more than that in there. But I will give her more during the day then when she's out grazing and hopefully she will eat a little more then.
my experience is they are nice dual purpose animals but I don't know about a "homestead" cow. They can be VERY high strung! Especially the milking cows- they don't produce a ton, which is fine, and their calves seem to grow very fast and muscular, but wow, every cow I have dealt with on the farm...
haha, yes, mine is Very "athletic" too. She runs a lot and is VERY frisky! They had only one other calf at their farm. these were calves for the fair. She is with my goats in the same pasture sometimes too. She was also given probiotics when she went to the Fair in late July. I bought some...
okay, so I should specify, its more just grass than "pasture" so I don't want to really count on her getting much nutrition from the (grass) pasture. Its more for "something to do" right now until next year when I can plant some actual decent pasture for her. She's on a halter with a 75' lead...
I bought a Jersey/Guernsey heifer calf a month ago. Shes now 5 months old. She is a great little calf but needs to put on some weight. She's visibly thin. I think perhaps the move and change of feed is throwing her off a little. She transitioned well but perhaps she was getting better/more feed...
If its an accelerated program 10 oz seems correct into 2 quarts water. We feed a moderately accelerated program and dont have any problems with nutritional scours. Calves need milk to grow. The standard 1 gallon/day is NOT enough especially in winter. It may certainly meet its maintence...
Not a hernia. MOST heifers that i deal with on a daily basis get that. Its not a big deal, sometimes it will get alot bigger than that. Its just swelling. The Vet told me once WHY they get that, but i cant remember what he said. Looks like she's getting there. He udder should get fuller and her...
:lol::lol: you totally have me laughing "her girly parts" . Yes, sometimes i think... wow, that calf is going to literally come sliding out if mom coughs!!!!!!! That's the way nature intended it to be i guess.
I hope all is well... update us!!!!!
I work with Calves from birth to freshening and MOST of the bloat cases I see in my area are from Clostridium. I believe types C & D are most previlent. When we have a calf that is bloated I give 10CC pennicillin orally IMMEDIATELY when I see they are bloated, or even if their stomach just...
No, no one is scaring me off!!! I dont mind bluntness, Im kinda like that myself. I certainly DO know how tough it is to make a living farming. We struggled the WHOLE time I was growing up. To the point where my parents could barely put food on the table. that was when we were raising pigs and...
2 head to start with.... and my DH has a full time job so this would be our secondary income (if any) I dont make squat anyways right now. I work my A** off for $11/hr and by the time i pay for gas and daycare...its about $6/hr.
:lol: :lol::lol:
RoydWood- yes, in another post I mentioned that I would only have 10 acres. That is kinda subjective tho... Okay, heres the deal. My DH wants to build a house (I want a barn and chicken coop) on his father's land. We woudl need to buy 40 acres to build a house there(per...
Are there other signs of heat??
like.... Alot of vocalization
Is her backend swollen and red?
Does she have clear discharge?
Is she more alert and annoying than normal?
If your not 100% sure she is pregnant, just call a vet to come check her. Thats the only way you will know forsure.
Okay, so I am a Dairy farmer at heart, grew up on a Farm. When I was young, we had steers, then pigs, then finally my dad got into Dairy farming. Anyways, I showed beef cattle for 4-h a few years and loved them. So now i want to start raising some beef cattle. Im married, have a young family...
In terms of easy to get rid of, I mean, sell what we can for breeding stock, and if we have some left, then keep what we need for the freezer and then either raise the few we have left and sell as beef, or if we dont have room, direct market to someone as steers, or whatever. I wouldnt send them...
