Hi @Roseatebunny ! I love seeing brokens and harlies born especially when you don’t realize the cross will produce them! I have a self black doe, a self broken blue buck, and a lilac agouti doe. My buck and the black doe produced a litter of 4- 2 mini daddies, 1 dark gray and one tricolor! My...
Mine arent near as useful as theyre supposed to be 😂 I pet mine when I feed and most of them are tame enough to handle when they need to be. My mini Rexes are big babies and my Cals are tolerant at best. But I know of a method of holding where you pinch the base of the ears; this pinches a nerve...
I know a guy who drives rabbits half a hour to the riverbank and breeds them in the back of his truck if he has a pair that absolutely will not breed. So I guess it works 🤣
I've heard that Charolais are crazyyy from a local farmer that had 1 bad one but we've been raising Char-Angus/beef crosses for a few years with skittish (not pets) but fairly well behaved heffers producing pretty good beef.
I’ve had a few litters of kits with “nest box chill” that grows out within a month or 2. Interestingly, I once bought a purebred Cali doe who supposedly had nest box chill who never grew out of her gray coat! I never got the chance to breed her to see if her gray would pass on or if it was just...
That's exciting!! And (not to steal your thunder haha) but I found out that my senior mentor just bought out a neighbor's American Chins and he may have some for me to show in the fair this year!
Understandable. I'm honestly just asking around at this point but I feel like there is a breeder who has tried this or there might be a niche for mini cals for the show table if there was a standard or for pets/companions.
Another question @Larsen Poultry Ranch do you think then you could create a mini Californian with Cal type but smaller? Out of another dwarf breed possibly since rexes have a particular type/fur type and are quite different?
I know Rex/mini Rex has a himi variety. I just would like to experimentally breed Cals and Rexes. Just curious honestly... I only have 1.5 more years of high school before I go off to college so it's not like it will go anywhere if I try it now.
For anyone also curious- I've done some research that I would like to document here--
Rex gene is "r"
Satin gene is "s"
Angora/wool gene is "l"
Standard genotype is RRSSLL (or RrSsLl)
Any special type will have BOTH recessive (Rex=rr, for example)
I know that Rex can display Himi but I have all my cages somewhat full of my self Rexes which I'm focusing on and Cals which I have a regular buyer for. I'm just curious as to whether I *could* experimentally breed the himi back into Rex/Rex into a standard bred himi.
Curious, and I doubt I will go anywhere with this BUT...
I have 5 self/self broken mini rexes(2 bucks, 3 does) and 4 Cals (1 buck and 3 does) and I was wondering if I could experimentally breed a Cal to a Mini Rex to gradually work toward Himalayan colored standard Rexes? Does anyone think...
Update, I have a black buck coming in a week or 2 for my Sadie doe and have been contacting several breeders about some more does. If I can't get does for Dino I will have to get rid of him, although I would hate to.
It's honestly up to you. I would buy Dutch or a fancy breed at that much, but I bought all of my Cals from a neighbor for no more than $25/head. They do look like really nice animals. But don't base it on my opinion only
