I watched a 1/2 Jersey die from mastits, just because "some one" figured the calf would take care of everything.
In my experiance with pure Jerseys and 1/2 jerseys(and 1/2 holstiens), first calvers did OK with 1 calf.
I would make sure all 4 quarters were being milked.
I would not over feed...
If it was mine, the first thing I would do is check the heifer for any udder problems. If she is in pain, she's not going to be very nice to her calf!
Then I would take the calf away from her for the day, (letting her see it)for a few days, just to get a clue as to much milk she is making and...
Bronco Hollow, nope haven't broke anything lately!(yet)
I have been running the tiller to clean out a ditch for the past few days! If Hubby ever fixes the brush hogs I broke, I will need the tiller to start making another hay field, so I am really TRYING to be careful!
We won't tell him about...
Update on Sam!
Had the guys put her in the squeeze for me tonight.
I could fit 2/3 of my pinky in a hole just above her hooves!
It's not stinky or pussy.
Seems to be draining good.
The bull is still here.
Hubby called the guy that wanted him and he hasn't called back? Hopefully the guy is OK, because he's also my cattle hauler!
I don't care where the guy hauls him too, I just want him gone!
Afternoon everybody!
I admit the rain was needed, but it can stop now!
I need to do some weeding and I don't want to weed in mud!
Bronco Hollow, love the lama picture! I've been trying to get one of my australorp hen standing in the ducks swim dish, but I think she is camera shy!
Yea, I'm kinda on the fence with the whole thing. There is still a little bleeding.
Think I am going to try get a vet, Hubby and the boy, at the barn at the same time.
If I do that, and can catch a bull calf that I might not have gotten around to banding, what kind of care does a fresh cut...
The boy and I made 6 pints of blueberry jam!
We were going to make more, but we ran out of sugar!
Amy, 5 gallons of cukes? I get worn out just doing a few jars at a time!
My first thought was hoof rot too, used to get that here all the time in the winter, but we've been so dry even most of the wet ground has turned to concrete.
She has a definite sore, which is why I figured she might have just jammed something into her foot.
Thought about dehorning her...
Well, we got her in the squeeze!
Since our resident question answerer never answered my question, I went ahead and cleaned her up with iodine. I'm thinking she just hurt her foot, and it festered up.
Since Sam did try to take Hubby and the boy on, instead of just going into the squeeze, I...
Good afternoon folks!
Had one of them low blood pressure forget everything mornings!
So used to having Hubby home, I almost forgot to wake him up to go to work! Watched him drive away with my smokes(yea I know bad habit should have let him keep driving) He left them for me down at the gate...
