Yep. I would eat horse. Could I eat my pet dog, no. Could I eat a strange dog? Maybe. Couldn't eat my pet dairy goat either though, but I eat her boys when she has them.

If I designate it as a meat animal and don't form the emotional attachments that I do to a pet animal then I'm fine. We're actually looking at either horse or llama as our next butchering project. We'll see which one comes up first.

You can "donate" an older or lame horse to zoos or feline breeding compounds and they will humanely butcher and use the horse for feeding the big cats. I worked at a place and this is what we did.

I took a class at a zoo and they trained the tigers with horse meatballs. Pretty sure they used it as a staple food source too. So I take it they get at least some of their horse from donated old horses?

I will be feeding my dogs, cats, and ferrets raw meat, bones, and organs. If I have to cull a horse due to old age or whatever, could the horse be fed to them? (Obviously not the weight bearing bones.) I'd hate to feed an expensive, trained horse to my dog, but if it died anyways, would that be an acceptable way to dispose of it?

so. ill
feeding a horse that had died to dogs and cats can be done. but unless you have a large freezer to keep the meat in, it will go bad quickly, especially in the heat of summer. they sell leg bones of cows a butcher shops, so even the leg bones could be fed. i personally have not been hungry enough to eat a horse, opposum, racoon, or other varmits. however, if i was hungry enough.....yep

I read that dogs should not be fed cooked bones or heavy weight bearing bones. And I plan on having plenty of freezers for that purpose. Maybe that's what I'll do with the deceased horses, as long as they weren't ill.

@ Back to Nature - Cooked bones tend to break and shatter when dogs chew on them. And the sharp pieces could hurt your dog. Uncooked bones aren't as likely to break I suppose.

As far as the subject of this topic, I've never had horses growing up, so I don't view them as pets. I wouldn't have a problem eating one, as long as the animal was bled properly and the meat processed properly, too. If I do ever eat horse meat, I would not advertise that to most people because I know how it can be a sensitive subject to some people that raise and love their horses.

As far as cats or dogs, I'd have to be pretty hungry before I'd eat either.

I wouldn't eat a cat, dog, or ferret. Maybe a horse. It depends. If I ever do buy myself a Friesian like I'm hoping, I definitely will NOT eat it; they are WAY too expensive to be taste-testing...

the ban of processing horse for consumption was a big mistake imo
There are places all over my state where people take old horses that no longer have any use to the idiotic owner so they take em and let them lose in the middle of nowhere to be fed upon and die off.
they would be much better used processed an shipped to shelters or prisons, which i dont support but thats another opinion in its own. Simply a waste, and people bich about inhumane, taking a totally dependent animal and sending it to its death isnt very humane imo, but hey im crazy to think that its life would be better served as a meal to a bum or scum inmate. hell ill take it and eat it.

I quite agree. I hadn't thought of that. I'm sure my uncle in prison wouldn't mind eating horse if it meant he got more food. They starve them in there.

Also, I see plenty of homeless people begging for food here. I'm sure after a few days of starving they'd be grateful enough for a horse burger too.

Are you sure they let the horses loose in the wild to die? Where would they have space to do that? I just never heard of that; I always thought the old horses went into pet food...

I would. My dad said its a little stringier and sweeter than beef, nothing wrong with it except what is in the public's own mind.
