for the first time I saw today one of my girls had cactus spines in her ears & under her chin. do I need to pen her down & remove them? do they rub them out? (my girls always rub a lot), or do I need to take action?
thanks.

What kind of cactus? I may live in Kentucky now but I am 3rd generation cattle family out of Southern AZ.

Does it seem to be bothering her? Any swelling or bleeding?

thanks for replying. it does not seem to be bothering her. my fear is that the spines will work their way in - like porcupine quills do

Cactus spines have evolved to spread the seed of the plant. Most of them will fall off naturally. I would only be concerned if it was the barbed hook variety like you see on barrel cactus.

As long as they aren't bothering her and there is no swelling, I wouldn't worry about it. You may want to give her some Pen-G in case of infection but that is up to you. If they are around her mouth you will need to remove them as it can affect her ability to eat.

I would try to get them out if possible, because they can break off and become imbedded in the lips and mouth and cause abscesses. Happened to our dog and one of my sheep from prickly pear cactus, and paddle cactus with thicker thorns.
