Hi there! I'm a long time lurker and have finally made an account. My herd right now is small, just back yard bunnies, colony style.

I grew up on a farm though. Cows, pigs, horses, bunnies, elk and deer. Yup my dad was into exotics. Oh, can't forget the chickens either! I'm still afraid of geese to this day....

So hello! It's nice to meet ya all.

Welcome from Ohio! What kind of rabbits do you have? Are you hoping to get any other livestock someday?

Well, right now I'm stuck in town on a half acre and I'm not even supposed to have the rabbits without a city permit, etc. etc. Bunch of crap really.

In 5 years or so I'm moving back home and putting a house down on the end of the field my parents house sits on. I have hopes of keeping sheep (meat breeds, not wool breeds) in the front 40. My brother is throwing a fit about that, of course, because he wants it all just to sit fallow so he can hunt. He has no understanding of how a farm actually works, and he grew up right along side of me, lol! There's 100 acres there. Half of it is forest and fields that were fenced for cows, horses, a quarter is field, and another quarter is fenced with 10 ft fences for elk. So really, I could probably farm just about anything long term there. Sheep is my goal though. And bunnies. And chickens. Maybe turkeys.

And I posted all about my rabbits now in the rabbit section. Sorry, messaged.. Rather confusing, lol! Either way, there's:

Buck Champagne D'Argent the kids named Sir Captain Overlord Nibbler (Bonus points to anyone who knows what show that came from!)
Doe Champagne D'Argent is Alfalfa (Good momma)
Doe Flemish Giant rew is Clover (Mediocre to bad momma)

Welcome to BYH! You definitely need some turkeys! (can you tell I'm a turkey fan? lol)

Great to have you here! Sounds to me like you're gonna have quite a farm!

Best of luck to ya with your plans!

(and because you can never have too many exclamation marks XD)
Micah!

Greetings and welcome to BYH! Glad you finally "tested the water" and hope you find it "just fine" :D Lots of great info available in the threads, and lots of great folks here who are always willing to lend a helping hand/support if it's asked for/needed. Make yourself at home and I look forward to reading about your adventures over time. I too want to get some meat sheep and am just about 100% sure they will be Katahdin ewes and a Dorper ram to breed a heavier meat cross. I've read a lot about that particular cross and it's all been positive. I used to hunt elk and deer and love both meats. Where are you located and where is your dad that he keeps elk? Maybe I'll contact him and buy a cow for the freezer... would most likely be be less expensive in the long run over hunting them... ;)

Edit to say Just read the title, Northern Minnesota location... You should put that as your location in your profile so old folks like me (who will forget this title many posts later) won't have to ask.

Welcome to BYH!!! Champagne D'Argents are awesome!!! I love their size and color. I have some Dutch, and a couple NZs(pets). That thing with the zoning is a pain. I don't know if I'm zoned for rabbits, but what they don't know won't hurt em'! Is where you live just not zoned for livestock, or do they specifically mention rabbits?

My dad's out of exotics now. Getting too old. Heck, all they do is gardening now.

It specifies chickens and livestock. House bunnies are okay. I just have to not say anything or piss off any neighbors lol
