My dog attacked our Nigerian Pygmy last night. He has a few bites on the inside of his hind leg which I cleaned and bandaged to stop the bleeding. We sprayed Blue Kote on them today and got penicillin in case of infection. We've only had our little guy a week, so he's barely weened. He's eating and drinking, but seems to be traumatized. Just laying around like he's out of it. Has anyone had experience with this?

Sorry that happened to your goat. Has he had any tetanus shots? If not you might want to get the tetanus antitoxin ASAP.

I'm sure it was very traumatic for him, give him some time. Does he have a goat buddy?

I've never faced it, but a few questions come to mind. Is your only goat?.....what kind of dog?....were ya hoping they would be "Buds" and were sharing the same space? Your little buckling will be traumatized for a while, but barring any major tissue damage or infection, he should heal up. Is he up-to-date with his CDT? If he is left alone he could suffer depression too, by not having any of his own kind around him. Especially since he is just weaned, he is still looking for momma. Hope it turns out good for ya, but would keep an eye on the wounds and take him to a vet that knows goats.

We have an 18 month old female pygmy that we got a couple months ago. We were told she might be pregnant. In an effort to give her a "herd" we found the kid from a different breeder, but we had to wait til he was old enough to wean. So I guess he does have a buddy, although they haven't really bonded yet. Mow (kid) is much tamer than Gertie as he was handled more. We are trying to contact the breeder to see if he was updated on tetanus. He did give him a probiotic when we got him. We're very new to goating, and trying to educate ourselves quickly. No, we weren't trying to make them buddies. We have three dogs who know not to mess with the chickens. They have also been acquainted with the head end of our female goat. We always supervise any interaction with all of them. Long story short, our kid got out of the pen, so my husband put him in the backyard until we could investigate. My son didn't know he was back there and let the dogs out. Our Jack Russell could not suppress his instinct with no one around. The whole chaotic event took less than five minutes. They found a way under our house and continued the struggle until we were able to get them out. What is CDT?

It is a toxoid vaccine used to protect against enterotoxemia, caused by clostridium perfringens types C and D, and tetanus. It is not the same, but similar to you getting a tetanus shot in an ER with a wound.
It is good that he has a partner, and if your plans are to keep him as a buck, then he will be able, willing, and ready to breed your doe at around 3mnths of age....they mature very quickly, and grow rapidly. There will be character and personality changes until around 17-24 mnths of age. Goats have decent memories, so he may go after that dog one day on his "Terms". Just be careful and watchful....situations are going to happen, don't beat yourself up too much.

Greetings and welcome to BYH from NE Texas. Sorry your recent issue brought you to us, but glad you're here. There's a wealth of info and experience shared in the various threads and I urge you to spend some time here reading. You'll learn a lot that you didn't even know you didn't know. You'll also get to "know" many of the great goat folks we have here, all of whom willingly offer help to those who need it. If you have further questions, just post away and mostly someone will be along in short order to help. Please put at least your general location in your profile. When you ask for advice, where you're located will be the most common first question to get asked back. What works for me in TX might not be right if you're in Ohio... Make yourself at home and please share some pics of your animals if you will. We're a bunch of picture addicts here :hide

You've now learned/experienced the number one source of attacks against goats... dogs; yours, the neighbors, strays. Hope you'll build a well fenced area to keep your goats in to protect them from outside predators. Fencing is your goats best friend and first line of defense. Any basic shelter inside that area that allows them to escape rain, and you'll be good to go.

Pictures of the wounds are always very helpful to those trying to recommend help... Are they punctures? torn flesh? rips? missing flesh? Cleansing with a 50/50 hydrogen peroxide and water mix is beneficial. You don't want to bandage to tightly as you really want air to get at the wound while still blocking flies. There will also most likely be bruising trauma to the underlying muscles. Hopefully there are no broken bones. Generally speaking, goats are pretty resilient animals and most heal rather quickly and well from situations like this.

Hope all goes well for the little guy going forward!

Bite wounds almost always get infected. Start the antibiotic and give the tetanus antitoxin, unless you know he had at least 2 CDT vaccines (3 weeks part). Banamine is also advisable as he will have pain and inflammation from muscle/tissue damage.

Thanks everyone! He seems much better this morning. We've kept him in the house all weekend, and he was up exploring the living room quite early. I haven't witnessed him drinking since yesterday morning, so I've been giving him a little water with a syringe. I never thought I would actually applaud a goat peeing in my kitchen, but I thought that was a good sign. :) Since the weather will be warmer today, we're going to put him back in the pen later - hopefully seeing his roommate will bring him comfort and get him back to his goatie self.
