A couple months ago, my family rescued a mini donkey Jenny named Rosie. We were told she was 14 years old and had been exposed to a Jack, so we had our vet take a blood test to see if she is pregnant, the results came back positive, but they didn't know how far along she was. She is in very bad shape, and the vet said that she is actually in her early 20s! She almost foundered... our farrier is working on her and she over-all looks very bad. She's very depressed and always has her head down in a corner, and won't pay attention to our yearling, Jasper. The guy we got her from said he thought she was due this spring, but obviously she was not, and then he called and told us she could be due any time until November, but she's not showing any signs of pregnancy. This is our first Jenny, so we aren't sure what to look for. When do they start growing and showing signs, and is it still possible that she's pregnant??

Any helpful advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I did a quick search. Donkeys can be pregnant 10-14 months. The pictures are really hard to tell. I personally have not dealt with donkeys, only horses.

The website also states "About 3 weeks before birth takes place, the jenny's udder will swell in the making of milk (lactation), and about 3 days before birth the teats will swell and may exude a little milk. At the same time, the pelvic muscles slacken and the bones around the top of the tail become moveable. The lips of the vulva may swell out to be flush with the hindquarters a few hours before delivery. The jenny also becomes restless and may stop eating. If she is free to go where she likes, she will hide."

Poor old girl...I hope she perks up.

With a gestation that long... hard to tell if she is still pregnant, or lost the pregnancy.

The babies/baby don't grow impressively in size until towards the end...like last couple of months.

Poor thing. Maybe you can perk up her spirits by putting her in your yard for short periods and giving her special treats/attention.

As underweight as she still is, I hope for her sake that she lost the foal. If she was in decent condition, foaling in her early 20's would not be a big deal, but that body doesn't need the extra stress of trying to nourish another in addition to itself.:(
