DSC_0101.JPG building duckhouse 10.JPG 6 drying off.JPG Hubby and I are s-l-o-w-l-y creating our own little farm-lette nestled in the north Georgia mountains. We have about 1/3 acre, so every square inch is precious! Presently, we have 2 cats, three dogs, and four ducks and are currently expanding the "barn" (it's a whopping 5x7!) to house 2 small goats, 2-4 chickens, and bees. Yes, the bees will be "in" the barn (google Slovenian bee house) to regulate temperatures, save space and prevent tipping over a free-standing hive. And, yes, I know I'm weird, LOL! Normal is boring! :) We have several areas that are official "gardens," but are stuffing plants in every nook and cranny. Our dwarf orchard/garden is in the front yard on one side of the drive with 28 fruiting trees, bushes, and canes and veges in the spaces between. On the other side of the drive, we have several herb beds (our neighbors stop by regularly to ask what project we're working on! LOL!) The "pasture" is the fenced in backyard which is about 50x100 feet with a "doggie moat" all the way around to keep out predators. We've dug a little 8' pond for the ducks and they just love it! A sort of hoop house will be in the center of the "pasture" for tender trees/bushes and winter gardening. And (if we live that long!), we plan on transforming a storage space attached to the house into a small aquaponic greenhouse. SO many projects... so little time! :) I'm looking forward to hearing about what y'all are working on to improve my setup and sharing info too!

Welcome from NW Mississippi!!....:frow
We have goats, chickens, ducks, and cats here on our 20acres. It sure sounds like ya are getting the most out of your place there....:)....we have khaki campbell and rouens, what breed are yours? Is the pond 8' deep or 8'wide? We have a pond on our place, but the ducks are here by the house. I just don't trust putting them over there with the predators we have here. I have thought about building them a beach and pool, but just thinking is all I've done....we have to buy all our rocks here, cause there aren't any natural rocks around....just clay soil. We have a really good group of people here with tons of knowledge and experience. Make yourself at home and browse around the Forums and Threads, and if ya have a question, comment, or advice just feel free to post away....we all just jump in at different times depending on free time. Pics are always welcomed, so share as ya see fit. Your plans all sound really interesting and it will be very enjoyable to keep up with your progress.....:)
Again.....:welcome

That is A LOT on 1/3 acre! Good job. I think you still have room for meat rabbits. ;)

Greetings & welcome to BYH :frow Gotta second what Dave said... that's a LOT on 1/3rd of an acre :ep:th All I can say is :bow So this being the herd site and reading all the other interesting stuff you're doing, I have to ask... Have you checked out the sister sites? There are 3 of them and there are links right over there ---> in the side bar. I'm sure all three would provide further info and advice you could use. So while you're here, please browse around, jump in when you hear the call, & make yourself at home! Glad to have you with us :D

welcome from the arklahoma boarder. glad you found us. feel free to look around, ask or answer questions and just all around enjoy yourself. I agree with the boys, you have stuffed that 1/3rd acre full. good for you. what kind of ducks do you have? I have muscovie's and love them but have been thinking about getting a breed that lays better since the muscovies are seasonal breeders. what kind of goats are you getting. ya know that we are all curious or nosey, which ever you want to call it. keeping bees in the barn is indeed crazy in my book because I am highly allergic to them and therefore terrified of the little buggers. I do however love the honey they produce. i'll have to look up Slovenia bee keeping. while i'd never do it I will defend your right to be as "weird" as you want because in my book different is good.
I have to agree with pastor dave about the rabbits, they take so little room and are easy to care for. I keep just 2 or 3 breeding does and a buck and have more than enough rabbit to eat and share with family. their manure is great for the gardens and like goat manure it can be used fresh because it won't burn the plants like other poo.
again welcome, hope you enjoy your stay.

Again.....:welcome

Ducks are Welsh Harlequin and one magpie that I plan to sell next year, The pond is about 8 feet around and 18 inches deep. It was deeper, but the ducks keep it stirred up! I flood it with a hose about twice a week if it doesn't rain. Eventually, I plan to build a natural filter. My soil is clay too. I added 5 bags of bentonite clay (from a well-digging guy @ $5 each) and it holds water wonderfully!
