Hi All,

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts as this is my first experience with kidding. My doe kidded about a week early. The 2 bucklings were stillborn and the doeling is amazing!! However, my doe is licking her constantly. She is especially licking her bottom. This frequently pushes her and sometimes pushes her over. It can make nursing a little tough because she is pushing and licking at her and often pushes her off of the teat. I know that licking the kid is normal after delivery, but this has now been going on for 3 days. Is this normal? Any thoughts of what I should do?

Thanks you so much!!

The doe sounds like an over-attentive mom. Is this her first freshening? I should think the doe will settle down soon as it could also be a hormonal rush from delivering.

Sorry to hear the bucklings didn't make it... but considering they were a week early it is understandable.

Glad to have you with us and hope to hear more from you and be able to enjoy seeing your precious little doeling grow up. That was a veiled attempt to beg pictures, please and thank you.

Thank you Animalmom! She is a first freshener. I just wanted to be sure that I am not missing anything. I appreciate the help from someone more experienced. I have another doe who should kid any day now and I just want to be more prepared. I have watched a ton of videos and read everything I could find. Here is a picture of violet in her sweater on her heating mat. She is a sweetie!!

Ah, she is a sweetie! Please keep all of us posted on her progress and how your other doe does.

It doesn't seem to matter how many times we go through birthing with the does, it is always exciting, thrilling, heart-stoping and a blessing.

Have you weighed your little Violet yet? That is the best indicator as to if she is getting fed by her mom, besides having a nice warm belly. Did the mom get her CD-T shot a month before delivery? How about the doe who is due? And... don't forget Violet's shot at 4 weeks with the followup 30 days later. CD-T is given sub-q and you use 2mm.

Sorry, I get all excited about goat babies and tend to ramble on.

Oh, if you haven't gone over to the New Member Introduction section at the bottom of the home page, please do so and introduce yourself... and when you have a spare moment it would be helpful for the rest of us if you would put your general location on your Personal Details page. It doesn't need to be specific, your state is good. That can help the rest of us if you need advise. What works in the Heart of Texas may not work in upstate NY.

We all want you to be successful and happy as another human owned by goats.

I weighed her today (3 days old) and she was 2.56 pounds. I understand that this is normal (on the smaller side) for a Nigie. Mom got CD-T and rabies 2 days before she was born (because she was unexpectedly early). We meant to do it 2 weeks before. I do plan to do the 4 and 8 week immunizations. I need to find out how to get them so I can do them myself instead of having the vet come out. Any thoughts?

I will update my info. When I signed up I put my name. Is there any way to change it to have a display name (instead of postings by my full name). Also, what does Herd lurker mean?

Both. The sweater doesn't make a difference. However, she is doing much better today. She is still licking her, but not nearly as much.

You can pick up CD-T at most Farm Stores... call around to see who has it in your area. Tractor Supply carries it. You can order it online but you will probably have to spend more for overnight/air shipping.

https://www.scahealth.com/scah/product/bar-vac-cd-t These folks are good to work with, good prices, very fast shipping. As you can see CD-T isn't expensive and a little bottle would work very well for you. Remember the dose is 2mm. You should pick up some 3mm syringes, if you don't already have them and I like 20 gauge 1/2" needles although a lot of folks use the 3/4" needles.

You might want to pick up a few 6mm and a couple 12mm syringes just to have on hand. I find the 12mm without a needle makes for a handy drench gun.

I don't know how to change your name to an alias. I think you may need a moderator to change that for you. Don't quote me on that. @Latestarter, are you a moderator? Can you help with this question?

Herd lurker just means you haven't posted much. Now it shows "Just born" which again is just a designation for a new person. Nothing personal. Right now mine says "Herd Master" and it makes me chuckle.

Considering your wee Violet is the remaining part of a triplet explosion, I think her weight is just fine for now. Check her again every couple days just to see that she is gaining. I wanted to ask you if Violet had her lower front teeth when she was born. If she did then she was more full term than you thought. If her teeth had not come through the gum, or were just below the surface then she was indeed preterm and that makes a double blessing for you on her survival. I bet you this little darling will bring your heart much joy.

I'm no longer a moderator. You can change your screen name but it has to be done via administration. Make sure you have the name you want picked out before you ask. You should do a search to make sure nobody else already has it. Then PM "Sumi" and ask her to change it for you. To PM, mouse over your name top right. A drop down will open, click on conversations. It will open your BYH msg center. Top right click Start a New Conversation. fill in the blanks and click start (send) When you address it, simply type the name - Sumi
