This has started recently. Google ads pop up on the right side. I can x it off, but the next time I go to another page, here they come again. One of the ads is a long ad with no way to x it off. When I open a thread to read, the first comment box comes up. Then the page jumps up and down until another ad opens between the first and second comment.

I went to settings on my computer and put pop up blocker on high, but I am still assaulted by stupid unwanted ads that make the page jump up and down. No other site is doing this, only BYH. It is irritating me. @Sumi @Nifty

I am not a complainer, but this is driving me crazy. Make it go away!!! PLEASE!

You can, as was mentioned above, buy your way out of it for $20/yr.
They don't bother me. I grew up listening to only AM radio baseball games in my Dad's truck, which was prone to lots of static, from all kinds of sources, and as we drove along and the static began, my father would remind me..."Just listen to the game and ignore the static" . It works.

I agree, that they have gotten much much worse in the last few weeks tho.
The only thing i wonder about regarding the ads is..
"Has a single soul here EVER clicked on any of them?"
I have not, nor will I ever.

(pretty sure tho, whether anyone ever clicks one of the ads or not, they will continue, unless you download and install an adblocker.)
I have recently read that Google Chrome itself has promised to begin blocking the more irritating and intrusive ads themselves, beginning sometime in the next few months.

I'm sorry that the ads are causing problems. If there are issues above what we'd expect, please keep letting us know. Like the majority of websites on the internet, the ads on BYH keep our wonderful site free for our visitors to use. Unlike most sites though we provide our members with a way to upgrade their accounts to enable them to turn off advertising.

Please keep in mind that hosting and maintaining a site like BYH is very expensive. We know many visitors do not want to see advertising. Some people block ads, but we appreciate visitors that upgrade their membership to have ads removed. This is definitely the appropriate way to use the free services of the site without advertising.

We try VERY hard to find topic-related advertising, but it's very difficult to find enough niche specific advertisers that are interested in sponsoring a site like BYH. When that happens we need to turn to third parties (like Google AdSense) to supply the ads, and unfortunately we have much less control over what ads they display.

With that said, we're always working very hard to have related and appropriate ads on BYH, so if you see an ad that is inappropriate (compared to other sites on the web like CNN, Yahoo, etc.) please let us know!

Ugly - Loud - Annoying - Inappropriate Ads:

To find and remove the ad we need to know as many details about the ad as possible. We work with many ad networks which makes it difficult to track down who is showing a specific ad.

If you see an inappropriate ad, here is what we need:

  1. A screenshot of the ad on the site (how to do a screenshot)
  2. The time & day(s) you saw the ad
  3. The "click URL" of the ad. One way to get this is to hover-over the ad and right-click and copy the link URL.
  4. PM to a Staff member or email to Support

(Note: for the ads that are inappropriate that slip through our filters, you probably won't want to click the ad. Hopefully you can still grab some info about the ad to make tracking it down easier)

Again, we are anxious to make sure these kinds of ads don't sneak through, so we need as much info as possible to remove them.

This has started recently.
Do you know when exactly?

I agree, that they have gotten much much worse in the last few weeks tho.
Hmm... that's interesting since we haven't changed anything on our end. Can you provide some examples for us to review?

I know that before I upgraded I was having the same problem. If I tried reading a post or reply to one, the dang page would be jumping everywhere. Finally got fed up with it and upgraded.

I don't mean to make anyone upset, but i would think all of us regular users of the site would step up and become a supportive GOLDEN HERD MEMBER as an example to others who may visit. I am on a very fixed income and managed the $20.00, i would encourage others to do the same. As we support each other....lets support our home base. :thumbsup

I don't know exactly, just about a couple of weeks ago. I completely understand about the ads keeping the site free and I deeply appreciate all the hard work @Nifty does. A couple of ads are ok, but inserting them between the thread text, jumping the page up and down, flashing ads on the right, is just too annoying.

I keep the sound turned off on my computer because too many of the sites just have way too many loud sounds.

I haven't seen inappropriate ads, just way too many of them that take time to load, jumping the page up and down.

This /\ is generally the complaint....not so much the content, but quantity.
As I said, it doesn't bother me much and as someone that firmly believes in free enterprise I understand it, and we all agreed to this when we registered.

It's in the TOS, and if you look at the bottom of most BYH pages, it clearly states that Cafemedia has input to this board and you probably already know Cafemedia owns AdThrive. It's simply the way of the internet world as it is today. (Google btw, is the middle man.)

Many boards and web based apps do offer a 'way out'...The "Go Premium" option like Youtube offers.

As far as why the ads have to be popping up more often all across most of the internet, injected between posts etc, changing, flashing etc.?
I had this explained to me on another board by that board's administrator and that may or may NOT be the case here:

"IF the ads were less 'annoying', there would be fewer people paying to go ad free."

Look at it like a prescription medication that you take, that works great but may also have a little undesirable side effect.
