What kind of wormer?

I wasn't sure where to post this. Today I've been trying to research what kind of wormer I'll need for the goat kids I'll be bringing home in April.

The current owner says she feeds goat wormer pellets, but after looking through old threads here it seems pellets aren't as effective? Is that right?

What should I get for them?

Pellets really are not good if you are trying to properly deworm your goat.

Much depends on what type of parasites you are dealing. Here, safeguard and Ivermectin are our go-to dewormers. Both are effective in our herd. But, the dosage is different than what is listed on the bottle, and safeguard needs to be given for 3-5 days.

Can Ivermectin only be gotten through a vet? Tried to do a google search and all I can find is Safeguard.

Can Safeguard be given while milking or would the milk need to be discarded?

I use Molly’s Herbals. It comes in a two pack set. The first formula is given for three days the first week. For the next 4-6 weeks, use the second formula once a week. Repeat. My goats can’t stand the stuff but I mix it with a tablespoon of black strap molasses and then mix that with a cup of grain. The formula sticks to the grain and the girls chow it down.

Lots of deworming meds are basically the same . Or the primary active ingredient's are the same . Safe gard -fenbenzole dosed for goats .Safe for all goats even pregnant does . Valbazen albendazole dosed for goats . Both at tractor supply. And Ivermictin which comes in many brand names . I found the cheapest one Ivermectin that is . Injectable Noromectin from Norbook , at my farmers CO-OP doesed at I cc per 34 lbs. of body weight I give it orally to my kids as young as four weeks . It's injectable but it works fine .I would have to find which awesome BYHer, told me to use injectable ivermectin and the dose . Thing is you can study deworming meds and find there only a few active ingredients. So many have to be used off label because goats have just gotten to be a big deal in the U.S. Drug companies are just starting to catch and on to that fact. I like a liquid drench dewormer , easier to use.

Pellets don’t do the job. First you need to know if they need wormer. Do a fecal at your vets office. Find out what your treating for, then go from there. If he finds Cocci worms, I use Corrid powder mixed as per instructions on label. If he finds barber pole or hook worm the I use ivermectin because I have at least one goat immune to cydectin wormer. Cydectin may work in your case. Dose depends on weight of each goat. The reason for a fecal is so you don’t worm too much and build up an immunity in your herd. Also monthly pasture rotation helps and finally in time a copper bolus won’t hurt them. These also given a capsule by weight of goat. Small goat 2 - 6 months old gets a 2ml. 1 year up gets a 4ml. Never more than one capsule at the time, no more than twice a year. Just don’t worm until you know you have a problem, but watch all the times you are feeding up for changes in pellet poop to clumping poop or worse diarrhea. In this case if there has been no feed change in their diet, I would pull a fecal sample. Learn the famacha eye scale (look up on internet) , watch coat roughness, for coughs, or staying away from the herd. Any thing that is different, make note and start your plan. This forum ( I new on here but been around the block and back) I’m sure has all the medicine types and doses for each. Read, ask questions and last but not least, reply, good or bad to your outcomes to the ones who respond. I read all reply’s and after I sort out the info I think I need for my situation. Sorry just saw this. You can get it online if through most feedstores. I use the 1% Ivermectin cattle/pig injectable, given orally.

Most deworms have a milk withdrawal. Some only a few days others substantially longer. These two have a short withdrawal.
