I got the basic Lixit nipple for the sheep but can't seem to train them in its use...smeared it with peanut butter and that disappeared but they still aren't drinking from that source, though they didn't have any other source. Drank like crazy after being penned in with the nipple as the only source, so that tells me they weren't accessing it.

Now I've ordered the bowl drinker nipple thingy and I'm hoping they will trigger that because it will have a little water in the bowl to interest them....but what about if they don't access that water for a bit and it evaporates...will they know enough to trigger that nipple again to make more water appear?

Anyone with good tips on helping sheep learn to drink from water nipple type drinkers?

I'm still using the old fashioned buckets. Watching this with interest.

Bay, from the info I've read, they will drink more from the nipple waterers than they will from open waterers....said sheep like cleaner water than most livestock. Don't know if that's true, but for me, if I can train them to use these nipple waterers, I'll waste less water trying to keep their water fresh, especially in the summer months. I use open waterers/buckets now.

I am attaching the nipples to a large, insulated water cooler...hope to convert that to a heated waterer in the winter months and a place to keep colder water in the summer~I can put a frozen 2 ltr bottle down inside there on these hotter days so they get cooler drinks.

Tried it with a Lixit nipple...the sheep couldn't figure it out, so will use those for the dogs instead.

Now I've got the bowl drinker for sheep and will get the fittings for it this week so I can use those with the cooler instead.

Looks like this one...

Looks interesting. I use three 5 gallon buckets and fill them twice a day, or more. For the lambs, I use two buckets. They love the fresh cold water when I fill the buckets up. I like your idea.

That is the type I am switching over to for the goats, I currently have two 5 gallon buckets out, but with the heat and constant cleaning I am ready to save water going through my well water filtering system and really looking forward to one less daily chore....looks like a win win for me and the goats :)
Found one on chewy.com for $29...may buy several, ducks, dogs, goats :thumbsup :woot
