Thursday..... another sticky day; it was only down to 72 last night, and mostly sun for the first half of the day. Very muggy and got up to 91 actual. Then some clouds and it rained after 2... but not everywhere...
Yesterday was even stickier... 92 actual with heat index at 99-101 all according to who you listened to. I did manage to mow the better part of the lawn, and need to get out the weed eater and do some of the rough, tougher big weeds.
DS called late afternoon... seems he spent the better part of Tues aft when we got back sleeping, and then got up to eat and back to bed to sleep... Got up yesterday morning, went to his house, did the dogs and chickens, and then took another nap. He hadn't been sleeping much with the headaches, and I think that since she did give him some relief Tuesday, that his body kinda crashed.
So, he calls and said maybe I could come help him at the farm. Seems there was no water, and the cows with the calves that need to be weaned, were down at the gate area near the long alleyway, there is also a water trough there... but he checked it and it was dry. So, I went up, we closed off the driveway, I got the gates into the 1st barn lot opened and fixed, and he took the 4 wheeler up there and opened the gate and called them down. They all came really good, and into the lot... and he went down and opened up the gate into the "fenced out crep area"... so they could go to the little creek that runs down through there. Moved the other couple cows over in with the heifers, and went down and opened the lower gate into the next sections of the crep area... so they could get water...
After we got them situated, I came home and got the 2wd ranger, put 3 15 gal barrels and 2 5 gal buckets with lids and filled them with water and hauled water back to the 12 heifers. They drank it pretty fast at first, so had been totally out ... so I came back and hauled a 2nd load to them... they had a little left so that gave them 60-70 gallons left after they had drunk their fill.... He called a buddy/well guy, of his, that helped him with a well pump last year. But in the meantime, the cattle HAD to have water.
This morning he had an appt with the lawyer to meet with the people that are with workman's comp... about his going back to work... part-time at least... as they are trying to get him off as much of the disability as they can... DS wanted me to go to be able to listen to what they had to say, and he asked if I minded if GF went since she might think of things or understand things better since she gets disability... (another whole story.... mental stress... but then she had the breast cancer situation... she will never go back to work anywhere)....
He had that assessment thing a month ago... and they determined that he was able to go back to work... well, physically, he is better than he was, but the headaches and balance issues and all that were NOT addressed at this "assessment"... SO... a consultation with the lawyer for a bit... then it turns out this is a phone meeting/conference thing... not even video... and after asking all sort of questions, and then DS explaining about the headaches and the dizziness, and the lawyer chiming in about how this was not addressed at this competentcy assessment thing... the person said she would have to talk to her supervisor/advisor as to where they could go from there...
The lawyer said after the call, that although the one dr said that he could possibly go back to some sort of work, no one consulted with the other drs... physchiatrist that they wanted him to see because of the toll the anxiety is taking and his moods and depression about what he can't do, the spine and pain specialist... 2 others.. lawyer said any one of them, and preferably more than one can refuse to clear him to go back to work... so it looks like this is going to be a moot point... DS had himself all worked up about it before he went... and I kept telling him to stop borrowing trouble until he found out what they were going to say.
As it is, he still had a bad headache, and the lawyer even turned off the florescent lights in the conference room, to help with his headache/light sensitivity. Indoor lighting is a real problem for him... and he wears a pair of sunglasses over the clip on ones he has for his glasses, on bright sunny days outside.
So, next thing is to get a couple of the other drs, that he has more mental/stress/pain interaction with... not just the actual physical problems.... to write statements that due to the stress and headaches and anxiety, that they will not release him to go back to work, and he will be back to where he was before this competency assessment... because they only addressed the actual physical capabilities. The lawyer said he has alot going for him ... but you have to "play the game" according to their rules and they are looking for reasons to say he is not co-operating and all this stuff...if the other consulting drs on record say he cannot go back to work... then he is not doing anything wrong...
I am sure that there are alot of people that cheat on this stuff... and we know some on disability that are less disabled than I am.... so I get it... but it's been a real mental strain. And he has so many times just quit in the middle of doing things to go take a break for an hour or 2 because his head is hurting so much... so it is not a put on .... Anyone know any employer that will let you come to work and then take off for a couple hours because they are dizzy or have a headache so bad that they can't see???? Not going to happen... that is why right now he can only do things on the farm and stops when he can't do them... but he sure isn't getting paid to do it...
It's a mess... and I wish he wasn't in the shape he is in.. it has continually gotten worse, and losing his job after being on the short term disability, has also affected his self-esteem because he was good at what he did and prided himself on doing his job... to the point of neglecting alot of other things and being miserable to work with at home, many times.. Lots of things involved in this... but hopefully this will take this stress off, once he gets some support from a couple of the other drs. to NOT release him for work... if it has to be mental stress and depression, so be it... even the lawyer told him that he needs to NOT go back to work when he is in this condition... let her deal with the situation for him with the workman's comp once he gets the drs to sign for him to NOT go back to work....
We went from there to Rural King, got a few things that we needed, that he didn't get the other day, including some more of the "Clarify" fly larvae suppression blocks for the cows, and then went to Chicken Salad Chick to eat and get some to bring home.... then came on back...
She drove down and back, so I went along for the ride.... but was good to listen in on the conference call on speaker phone with this lady representative at the lawyers office.......
Got home, and it had started to rain on the way, then stopped.... I got the barrels filled on the ranger, and took a load to the 12 heifers. They had drunk all the water, but did not go crazy for it as I dumped it in so that was good. Then I came home and started working on the meters, for meter calibration tomorrow... It rained a little bit so had to quit, but then it stopped so I went out, filled the barrels again, worked on the meters some more; they are supposed to be completely taken apart and cleaned..... some are pretty clean anyway, and then when the sun was going down and the mosquitos were starting to come out some, I took the 2nd load to the farm. DS had talked to the guy about the well, and they are tied up on a job where they have had no water for 2 days, and he told DS some things to do... and he is going to have to pull the pump.... for starters... so they went to another friend's place and got the stuff they needed from him to pull the pump and were headed back to the farm...
So, tomorrow he is going to pull the well pump.... and see if there is a bad wire or if it is the pump....
The cows and big calves are still in the 1st lot there and can go to the creek... and the heifers will be good until I get back from the meter check tomorrow... There was more water in the trough this evening than yesterday evening so they were not desperate for water... it will hold them until early afternoon tomorrow just like today.
PLUS, the temps are supposed to be 10-15 degrees COOLER and not near as humid tomorrow... so they shouldn't be so thirsty from the heat.
The good thing is that those bigger calves will definitely get weaned once the water gets straightened out..cows will get moved out and the calves will stay at the barn... Most cows look dried off, but they should have been off the cows and out of there 2-3 weeks ago....
Speaking of which... the first of the heifers due to calve, at snyder's (nurse cow pasture)... calved ...pretty sure it is a bull calf and it is a NICE calf... Probably born yesterday since I didn't get there with the water hauling situation.... Due to start Aug 1st... so right on time actually...
Did get all but 1 calf to come in for grain... the spring born ones need to be banded and such, then moved with their momma's to grass.... the holstein steer and the bigger black steer cannot fit through the creep gate anymore, the jersey calf still can squeeze through.... so they will have to be enticed in through a gate... probably will catch up a bunch of the cows to do that...so I can get them out of there... hopefully in the next 3-4 days.
GOT to get those 2 calves off the jersey, and the one on the other young cow that are still there... told DS that as soon as he gets the water fixed, they are going to the barn with the rest of the calves he is weaning there... Plus the bull comes out so that he does not try to breed back the ones just coming fresh... The 17 younger heifers have had 60 days to get bred... they will get preg checked once we get things situated at the barn; have one other group to come home to get calves weaned off and cows to calve... The just bred heifers can go to the pasture that we brought these preg heifers home from a couple weeks ago... the cows with big calves are there in section 2; and are to come to the barn once the water is fixed... Plenty of grass there in the 3rd section that we just partially cut for hay... and then they will be able to rotate to the other sections once the grass comes back some. Got some open heifers I think he might move there also...
Well, it's a lot later than I thought... I need to get some sleep so I can finish up the meters in the morning and go get them calibrated... then come home and see what's up with the water situation.
