Dealing with Coccidia in Goats

Disclaimer: The author of this article is not a vet and each individual should seek local veterinarian advice on dosages and treatments. The recommended dosage in this article is off label.

What is coccidia and what does it do?

Coccidia is a protozoan infection in goats (and other animals). More often young goats, it would be considered most often in a goat between the ages of 3 weeks and 2 years.

Most common symptom is diarrhea (but it is not always present). Diarrhea brings with it - dehydration.

Coccidia causes intestinal damage that normally does not reverse itself - resulting in poor doing goats who do not keep weight on well and aren't able to absorb nutrients properly.

Dealing with Diarrhea:

If diarrhea is present then you also need to treat for dehydration. You can do this by adding electrolytes to the drinking water, orally administering electrolytes (we like human children's Pedialyte) or in severe cases by giving sub-q fluids.

Preventing and Treating Coccidia:
This is what I've "collected" from various websites, my vet and other avenues (seems to be the most consistent info). Prevention and treatment use the same dosage. Note that as with any medication there may be regional differences in dosages, you should always seek the advice of your veterinarian prior to administering any medication.

Di-Methox 40% Injectible (given orally)
1cc per 5# on day 1

1cc per 10# days 2-5

Di-Methox 12.5% (given orally)

3.15 ml per 5# of goat day 1

3.15 ml per 10# of goat days 2-5

Di-Methox Powder (add entire packet to 8 ounces of water in a soda bottle with a lid and shake it)

1 cc per 10# on day 1

1 cc per 20# day 2-5

Albon Suspension - This is what we use at Honaker Farm

2.5cc per 5# on day 1

1.25cc per 5# days 2-5

CoRid 9.6% Liquid (undiluted) - This seems best served as prevention rather than treatment.

2.5 ml per 10# for 5 days

CoRid 20% Powder

2.2 g powder to 12 ml water per 20# for 5 days

Sulmet Drinking Water Solution 12.5% (undiluted)

1 ml per 5# day 1

1 ml per 10# day 2-5
