My trays are plastic, rectangular containers I got at the dollar store. They are about 10x13--like a cake pan. I put holes in the bottoms with a hot soldering iron. I start with 1 1/4 cups of grain for each tray. I am using wheat right now, but just got some barley that I will be trying...
I have holes all over the bottom of my trays , so they work like a collander. I put them in by using a soldering iron to melt them. Really easy and fast. We tried drilling the holes, but it was slow and cracked the plastic. Actually broke big holes in a few that then had to be repaired (hot...
I do give Diamond V yeast to my goats--for the same reason (Fiasco Farm). It does look somewhat like what you get at the health food store, but I really have no idea if it is. It is much cheaper, however. They do like it, but I'm not sure I really saw a difference in their coats or overall...
My advice is go with the twelve tray from the start. You don't have to fill up all the trays if you don't need them, but you can if you need to--and once they get used to it, you probably will! My goats love it!
As to the layout, it really doesn't matter how many shelves or how many trays on...
We built a new "hoop barn" this last year, and are planning to build two kidding stalls in the back out of pallets. We were thinking of doing something like this so we wouldn't have to buy/build more feeders. Great to know it works so well! Thanks for posting!
This will be fine...if they eat them! Mine won't! I sprout them for 3-4 days, and then they love them. Can't believe how picky they are. It really boosts the nutrition, too.;)
Check out this link in the organic thread http://www.backyardherds.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=8882 I would also give a vitamen E tablet with this once a day.
We have two nubian does that were named when we got them: Liza, the herd queen, and Charlotte.
We kept one of Liza's doelings and named her "Sweety" because I'm always calling the babies "sweety." As in, "come on, sweety, go see mama." She is really misnamed, though, as she is a brat and...
She sounds like a sweet girl and it sounds like you're doing a good job with her. I always give mine some red raspberry leaf starting about 1/2 way through their pregnancies, or even earlier if I have it. It is very good for female reproductive tracts and can help give easier deliveries. I...
I use Molly's Herbal Wormer for my goats and really like it. Does anyone know if you can give it to rabbits? And if so, how do you give it? I was thinking a dosage ball made with oats and molasses (is molasses OK for rabbits?). We are just getting back into rabbits after several years off...
Sorry, mama24, but I have to respectfully disagree. One of the great things about using rabbit manure is that it does not have to be composted before using it! It can be directly applied to your garden soil with no ill effects. However, it should be scattered on the ground, not put on top of...
You might try the feed stores. Ask the owner/manager if they could tell you the names of anyone who buys the bags of dairy goat feed. If they can't or won't give that information ask them if they would be willing to give your name and number (print out some cards before going) to people who...
I have read on this board about the benefits of feeding fermented foods, but have no idea how you go about it. How, exactly, do you ferment vegies and/or grain? I am trying to get away from the bagged feeds because of cost (the cheapest "good" brand in our area is now up to $15.00 for a 50 lb...
Hi, Annamarierw! I'm in NM, too. I'm in the NW corner, where are you? Since you ask about people in West Texas as well, I'm assuming that you are on the southern or eastern side? That means that we're still quite a ways apart. But I'm here :D
Mzyla, you're right about the pasture here in...
Thought I'd bump this back up for those who will be starting pigs this spring (like me!) which is the wrong season for black walnuts and pumpkins. Molly's Herbal Wormer that many of us use on our goats can also be used on pigs...
What a great looking pig pen! I am hoping to get a pig this spring and was thinking about doing something like this. How did you attach the pallets together? They look so neat. I also am wondering if you have it staked in somehow or if it is free-standing. If it is free-standing, will it...
Mine kidded in May and was giving me nearly a quart every morning but now it's down to less than 2 cups (maybe even less than 1 &1/2).
Is this a normal amount? I have been considering getting a few ND so that I can have milk year round. Right now I have 2 nubians and, since breeding season...
I wonder if they could have eaten something that disagreed with them, or even too much of something they loved :D We, too, let our goats out to browse sometimes. It is never for very long (usually 30-45 minutes). Once, our doeling ate so much of a weed she liked that it gave her clumpy poop...
