    Broken horn

My rescue goat that already has a bad leg has managed now to break his horn. He is always head butting something. It didn't break all the way, but is broken almost in two about 3 inches from the end. It bled a little but is not bleeding now. What should I do with him? I thought about taping it up.

    Teeah3612 - A Farm in Progress

I have thought about a milk cow, but I don't know if I have the time right now. Maybe in a couple years when I finish school. My neighbor has the most beautiful calf. Of course it's probably a beef cow and not a milk cow:(

    Teeah3612 - A Farm in Progress

First update... Today is my last day with a full-time job. Starting Monday it's college life for me. As for the work around the farm, I don't think I mentioned this in my first post, but my DH and I are building a house on the farm along with all the other things we have going on. I finished...

    Fencing for goats

I gave up for the winter with my two bucks. They just run free. Peanut sleeps on the porch next to the front door and Buttons hangs out on the side of the house. I have managed to keep them away from Sassy. She is in a 6 foot chain link fence. I have a new area planned for them this spring and...

Can We Keep Mini Donkeys in with Goats?

Glad to hear this! I would really like to have a mini donkey or two and was planning to put them in with the goats.

    Trimming the hooves

I have considered learning, but it is hard on the back. Plus, my farrier only lives a mile away and charges me $20 to trim. Well worth the price:)

    Teeah3612 - A Farm in Progress

Where to start....? My DH and I bought a 32 acre piece of land in Mason County, West Virginia in February 2010. We are building a house on the land as we can afford to do so. Right now I am excited to be at the point where I have drywall in my bedroom and electrical outlets & lights that work...

    breeding age

She is about knee high and won't get much bigger. Peanut is about the same size, so these are going to be small goats anyway. My cats were bigger than Peanut when I brought him home:) I will wait till April as planned. I can hardly wait to have little babies running around. Hopefully I will be...

    breeding age

At what age can you begin breeding does? I have a fainter that was born April 28, 2012. When can I put her in with my buck? He was 1 on August 2nd of this year. My thought was to wait till she is 1 in April.

How to keep the tax assessor at bay:)

So, the tax assessor came out to look at my property last week while noone was at home. They left a nice little red card for me to complete on my new house I am in the process of building. They were unable to leave a card at my son's house. My big bad ferocious guard goat won't let her on the...

    Too old to castrate?

I have a 3 year old pygmy buck that I took in as a rescue. He wasn't really a problem until I brought home Sassy a couple of months ago. She is about 6 months old. I want to eventually breed her to my one year old buck. Can the pygmy be banded or do I need to take him to the vet to have him...

    What breed

One more question... Does anyone know of any breeders of Large Blacks in WV? Ohio and Kentucky would not be too far to go, depending on the location.

    Goat Names?

My NG/Fainter buck is Peanut, because his momma is Nutmeg and he was just a little nut when I got him. My rescue Pygmy buck is Buttons. His name was Benjamin Burford Buttons when I got him and that is too long. My Fainter doe is Sassy. The breeder was calling her that and it fits so we kept it.

Locking goats up at night? Help!

We have had our new doe (Sassy) for about 2 weeks and she is starting to get used to us. We spend time with her each day and I make her sit on my lap from time to time. We always make sure not to startle her, since she faints. Of course, when we first got her the fainting thing made catching a...

    slight animal addiction ?

My 22 year old son told me I needed to start a petting zoo this week. He said he saw a sign that said Alpacas for sale. I only have 3 goats - Peanut, Buttons, and Sassy 2 horses - Kate and Jasper 6 dogs - Rocky (Yorkie), Lilo (St. Bernard/Husky mix), Rayney (Pom), Roscoe (Beagle), Dyson (large...

    Wattle Fence

I too had to google it. It seems like a lot of work, but it would be a very good looking fence when you were done. It would also be inexpensive if you had your own property to forage the wood. I like it! I don't see why you couldn't use it for goats or other small mammals. I think the height of...

I just ask a lot of the same questions and got great answers. Here is the link to the thread... http://www.backyardherds.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=21096 The subject line is "What Breed?"
