    Grain finish schedule

Michelle I am feeding out a steer for April butchering. I started him out slowly with about a gallon of grain morning and night for around a week, then I slowly increased it and now he is getting 5 gallons a day. Around 120 days before butchering I will have that doubled so he will be getting 10...

    cow or heifer?

To me it depends upon the age of the cow. Also you need a lot more info about this cow. Has she had mastitisis? How does she get milked, hand or machine? Has she ever raised a bum calf?

    Planning our future farmette!

I would just AI the cows then you do not have to deal with the bull. Just take it one day at a time. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. I finished one of our steers on both grain and grass. I have to say he finished out a lot better then the ones we did not grain. Got one I am...

    Planning our future farmette!

What Karin said. It takes more acreage up here to raise a steer or cow because it is an arid place. Where you are currently you have a higher avg rainfall then we do. So if you do move to Wyoming you need to keep that in mind. Now where you are you could do that rotational grazing that...

    Planning our future farmette!

If you end up south of me the acreage per animal changes drastically. We butchered a steer in October and he was 947 pounds on the rail. That should last our family at least 6 months. We also have 1 lamb and 1 pig in the freezer too.

Hubby wants meat calves... help me know if it's a good thing or not

I'm just graining our eating steer. that one turned out well marbled and was better eating. Got another one I am feeding out. Our main herd does get barley hay along with grass hay. the replacements we kept are getting that along with alfafa

Should I raise a cow for fair?

Kacey I would look at a different breed for the first steer. I'd go with either a Hereford or as Royd will say a Galloway. Better temperments. I've seen too many 4-H kids get dragged around the arenea or not be able to even show their steers because of that breeds temperment. yes we owned a...

What age to get a angus heifer bred?

We put a bull out with ours at around 14 months. I know some guys who do it sooner and some later. Also depends upon when you want her to calve. We start the middle of march.

Hay I got some questions about Hay

The different cuttings of 1st 2nd and 3rd are normally an irrigaited hay. I've mainly seen it done with alfafa but have also seen it done with grass too. The second cut I just bought is a finer stem of alfafa then our dryland single cut alfafa. A third cutting will be even less stemmy and my...

Milking and the expense of equipment.

I have friends and family who get their milk from me. I traded our vet a set of cordless clippers for his counter top pastuerizer. So my milk does not get wasted. I also only milk once a day. I get 3 gallons a day. QM I used to hand milk but it got a little rough when my milk cow was licking...

Milking and the expense of equipment.

It was only 12 below zero. our high was 3 above. Just a little bit cold so the block heater on the oil pan really helps. Also it needs a 30 amp breaker and the one we are running it on is a 25 amp. Couldn't be too choosy, not too many milkers out here.

Milking and the expense of equipment.

Yes I think it is worth the investment. For me it roughly takes 20 minutes to milk my cow out. She is a little slower to milk out on one side then the other so I hook up the inflators on that side first. You need to remember that each cow is different so that time frame depends upon the cow...

Milking and the expense of equipment.

Ok I have a Surge milker. Only trouble I have with it is when it gets really cold it is hard to get going if you don't have the heater on it. I use Dawn soap and scrub brushes to clean the bucket, inflators, claw and the rubber ring. i use a powder santitizer, but you can use bleach to sanitize...

Ship her as a slaughter cow or butcher her. She's not worth the hospital bill if you gets you or someone else.

    AI or buy a bull?

Now if you are going to AI here are my costs. Semen storage for the year $65.00 Dairy bull semen $25.00 a straw. I bought 3 straws. CIDRS cost me like around $15.00-$20.00 a natural heat costs nothing if you can catch them. Heat detectors cost $20.00 but you get like 20 of them. I used 7 this...
