    great pryme's

Are the great pryme a Pyrenees? If so, they can vary, a lot. My first female came in heat at 10 months. My second one came in heat at 18 months! I had come to think my second female was steril or maybe was fixed (I bought her as a 7 month old pup) and the previous owner didn't tell me...

Our first LGD puppy coming home tonight!! **update**

Excellent Smithurmon. God willing, under 12 months you'll have a trustworthy LGD for years. They really are great protecting your stock. There's nothing like going over to do chores and take care of your stock and have that sense of confidence that your stock was safe through the night. I...

Big Brag section for your LGD's and working dogs purebred or not :o)

My little (well no so little anymore) boy Benny is growing up. Here's a few pictures from when he turned 5 months. He's already barking at night and starting to discern strangers from family. He's about to be sent to the main yard to complete his training with my older female Kira who...

Dusty has a gorgeous head. I love G Pyrenees, but its a shame that a lot of the working dogs are so off type. Can't blame the shepherds, they don't care about standards and type, just the performance of the dog.

Awesome. Once he's fully mature, god willing, you will have years of protection for your stock. Nothing like having a big dog telling people and predators to stay away!

Sounds like you're getting through it one step at a time. I was afraid you were giving up on your dog too soon. Almost every first time LGD owner I've known of (myself included), has gone through the trials you are. My own 15 month old who still very recently "loved" on a chicken seems to be...

Mugen, Those Komondorok are the cutest thing LOL. And full of fire I'd guess. Funny how LGD breeds are so beautiful and they are so because of their function.

Here's my LGD in training. Pictured at 8/9 months old while I was brushing her out. A real natural, learned to leave birds alone very quickly. With her deep, powerful, booming bark she is a fearsome deterrent for 4 and 2 legged predators. And another ...

Just for the record. My pyr cross is not a chicken killer, she wouldn't be here if she was. She did dispatch 2 very small pullets when younger by literally licking them to death. No puncture wounds or broken bones of any sort, but soaked in slobber. She no longer licks the chickens and no...

I wonder if this is genetic. I have two pyrs. In fact one of them is not purebred, she looks just like a pyr but she doesn't have the double dews and her tail does not make the wheel, she lifts it into a sable when excited. Anyway, the pyr cross is too playful. She LOVES to play. When I go...

    GP Chasing Goats

The moral of the story is .... Pups will be pups. The biggest problem I have seen with LGDs "to be" is that pups get thrown into flocks and are expected to act as mature, experienced LGDs. The little experience and the much I have read in this subject is that LGDs don't just happen. You can...

I agree with cmjoust, Everything you describe sounds like LGD. Especially the rumping, and that I think can be your escape outlet. If you tend the goats (feed) daily, go and do your chores after a brief greeting to him. He can follow and investigate around the place while following you...

Guardian dog chewed up a goat today.

I think the whole, don't get the dog bonded to you, don't pay attention to it, etc... The classic method applies if the dog is going to be in open range, away from the farm. But if your pasture is fenced and the dog stays in it then socializing as much as possible with the dog will only make...

dianneS, I guess my real concern with the neutering is the impact it will have on him as a working dog. My oldest female (13 months) was very mellow, which is not bad but she's supposed to be a working dog. While she wasn't friendly, she was certainly very indifferent to strange people...

dianne, You need to contain him somehow. Most people won't recommend placing a pup with the stock full time till he matures and becomes trustworthy, which yours clearly isn't. The fact that the dog plays with the sheep, and the sheep aren't afraid of him, to me that signals a good future...

I'm not an expert at all, but I 've read quite a lot while raising two female great pyrenees, 13 and 9 months old. To be quite honest, from what I've read and experienced, your dog is just acting like a juvenile/pup, which I know most all LGDs will do and will get over that as they mature...
