Thinking about doing bees. Is it really worth it?

UPDATE: If you have the time, keeping honeybees can be totally worth it under some special sets of circumstances... Fortunate for us, we are experiencing those special sets of circumstances... Before I describe these circumstances, I would like to preface it with this: We did not get into...

2019 Honeybee swarms, lessons, successes and learning experiences

Baymule, We raise Carniolians, Italians, Russians, and Heinz 57's! Babs, Never found out what killed the lambs. It hasn't happened again. A good rule to follow on the bees is: ALWAYS add another super when the honey bees have filled 80% or more of the boxes. If you permit the bee...

2019 Honeybee swarms, lessons, successes and learning experiences

Hi Babs! Yes, long time no talk to you! So sorry! Yes, sheep have been multiplying like crazy. It will soon be time to thin the flock...will probably sell more than half of them to keep our summer feed costs low. They more than doubled in numbers in the last 8 months. Yes, I heartily...

Nice operation Baymule! My dream is to start a beekeeping company too with a large shop and many blessed employees. Giving it our all now! Bunnylady, Yes, you are referring to the AHB [Africanized Hybrid Bee] and they can be utterly deadly. Most of our southern states already have them...

    Winter warmth

Cm, You will do just fine without insulation. We have similar temps here and never insulate and the honeybees did incredibly well during the winter [in January, we found massive numbers of frames full of brood]!

How to make an Ant Proof Beehive Stand

Finished prototype! Notice white paint applied to the steel rectangles to lower temps to avoid grease melting off the metal. We will set this stand in the sun today after applying the high temp grease. We will have nearly 7 days of triple digit temps starting Friday, so this will be a great...

How to make an Ant Proof Beehive Stand

New update my friends! We were able to obtain 500+ linear ft. of L-shaped shelving material for only $25 at a local auction. The saying, "One person's junk is another person's treasure" has certainly come true in this amazing adventure! We tack welded the metal shelving material using an 18...

How to make an Ant Proof Beehive Stand

And some more pics! And there you have it, a genuine ant proof bee hive stand that will last 15-20 years. I am presently experimenting with one more modification...and hope to post pics soon...here is how to do it: 1. The darn PVC end caps were too expensive for my liking [almost $3 per...

2018: Bee hive swarms, colonies, lessons, etc.

Bay, I hope you can have bees one day. I find working with them extremely rewarding and satisfying. Most important of all, America is in desperate need of bees right now... For us, we are gambling that our significant investment in bees will also eventually pay off. Just hope it works...

2018: Bee hive swarms, colonies, lessons, etc.

CLS, I "peeked" in a few of them mid week but was shocked to discover a number of them already completely filled! This is not a good sign in the sense it can encourage them to swarm again. Tomorrow is Saturday. Our plan is to thoroughly inspect every nuc. If there are eggs [sign of a new...

2018: Bee hive swarms, colonies, lessons, etc.

Swarm season has definitely arrived now and like a freight train, it has come roaring in! I prepared and hung two more traps last night at 10pm. I came home today at 5:30pm and much to my surprise, both swarm traps had swarms on/in them. One trap had one of the largest swarms I have captured...
