    Bees and my peaches

I've never had honey bees on my peach trees (except during blossom), but I have had yellow jackets going after the sugar in the fruit. If there is no nectar available anywhere else, then they would go for anything they can to store for winter.

    Hive inspection and box reversal

Checked on the hives again today. I probably won't have much chance to check on the hives for the next couple of weeks, so I wanted to stay ahead of them. Hive #1 was doing well with lots of brood, and many more blackberry blossoms have opened, so I added the super. Hive #2 so far is staying...

    Hive inspection and box reversal

So far, they are staying put. I added the super on top, so maybe that is keeping them there. Only time will tell. The blackberries have just started to bloom, and catalpa's are in full bloom. There is still yellow clover in bloom too, but it's towards the end.

    Hive inspection and box reversal

Score! My friend gave me 2 outer covers, 1 inner cover, lids with holes for mason jars, 3 deeps with foundation frames in them, 2 supers with foundation frames in them, and a screened bottom board. And all she wants are a couple jars on honey.

    Hive inspection and box reversal

Well, I screwed up. I started a hive inspection. I've been meaning to get in them for a couple of weeks, but the timing just didn't work out. I've been helping my mom through chemo, and well, things haven't been getting done like normal. I came home today and saw the first few blossoms...

    Hive inspection and box reversal

Yesterday was bee checking day. With the rainy weather we have had, I hadn't gotten out there to check on them. Plus, my mother had surgery, so I hadn't had the time. I started with the split I did off of the big hive. I did it too early, and they died out during the cold spell. I don't...

2018: Bee hive swarms, colonies, lessons, etc.

That's a ton of work building all of those boxes!

2018: Bee hive swarms, colonies, lessons, etc.

Wow, I guess I really need to get out and check my hives! I haven't had a chance to get in there, as I've been dealing with my mother's health issues lately. We are behind you on flow though. The clover hasn't blossomed yet, but I've seen the bees working the red filagree. The pear orchard...

The Tall Tale of the Poor Beekeeper Who Saved the Swarm of Bees

Nice shot! Silly bees for swarming with an oncoming storm coming. A nice size swarm though! I thought they are supposed to be able to sense storms approaching?

2018: Bee hive swarms, colonies, lessons, etc.

Wow, swarms already! Babs - do you have manzanita in bloom? My bees haven't been working my fruit trees in full force because the manzanita is still in bloom, and they are preferring that right now.

2017 Bee hive swarm information, history, lessons, successes, etc.

Mine built up quickly too. Much too large of a colony for so early in the season. Hence why I split off of them!

    Hive inspection and box reversal

Yeah, I need to get into the boxes and see if I have a laying queen. It snowed, and then I didn't want to disturb the hive around mating flights, and now it's raining. Next break in the weather and I'll be peeking. There are still some bees traveling to and from the hive, so I'm hoping for...

2017 Bee hive swarm information, history, lessons, successes, etc.

So interesting! I knew the bees were in demand for the almond crop, but had no idea they paid so much. No wonder they get trucked in from out of state! Best of luck to you in your new business!

2017 Bee hive swarm information, history, lessons, successes, etc.

I may get lucky, I looked it up and my queen should have hatched like a day ago. Tomorrow, the weather is supposed to get nice until Thursday, so hopefully she will get her mating flights done in that window of good weather.

I haven't been able to check mine and see if the queen was able to mate. Rain, cold and it's snowing right now. I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

    Users of Flow Hive

Plastic breaking, squishing bees when you close it, honey crystalizing, making sure it's cured long enough to actually be honey.

    Users of Flow Hive

I looked into it when it first was introduced. I have some concerns with the idea of it, but I haven't tried it out.

    Hive inspection and box reversal

I didn't notice any drones, but saw some capped ones, so soon! I did find bee casualties in the chicken waterer, so I added a stick to float on it and hopefully no more drownings. I have tried to give them their own water source, but they insist on the chicken waterer. They are collecting...

    Hive inspection and box reversal

I'm glad I checked on the hives today. Hive #1 needed a box reversal, as the top box was almost full. LOTS of brood, honey and pollen. They were starting to backfill, but no queen cells yet. Now they have a nice big empty box on top. Hive #2 (the one that swarmed in October) STILL has a...

    Fondant??

I've had good luck with pollen patties. Warning though......my dog thinks they are tasty. I turned my back for a second!
