do you open the gate toward you or toward them? i found that if i opened it toward them, i have better control. if i open it toward myself, they all lean in and push their way through. just a thought.

cl and cae test results - good news/bad news?

the breeders we purchased all of our stock from were contacted and we were told they did not test any of their stock for either CL or CAE, nor did they vaccinate for it, yet they sold 4h and breeding stock for 5+ years. hindsight is 20/20. i was so excited about and taken with the boer goat...

thanks! ours kids are 100% boer. i noticed on another site that a 3/4 boer buckling went for $200 as a wether and $250 as a buckling. kind of goes all over the map, doesn't it? i'm not wanting to squeeze a 4H kid, but i sure don't want to take a loss either. we're pretty new at this, so we have...

i tried the outside the fence feeding as well, after getting mauled a few too many times by my boers. first few weeks i split the herd up into two groups closing the gate to their mini pastures. then i lined up the flat bowls along the fence and would drop food through the fence. it worked so...

    Between A Few Farm Names...

we are "almost amish acres" and we aren't amish. friends called us that when they saw we moved from the city, heat with wood, grow/can/freeze our own produce, raise our own eggs, etc. i say it's because i won't give up my blow dryer or coffeemaker...

    converting farm land to pasture

it had soybean on it last year. i just thought dry land was better than the wet land they are now on. it's the lowest spot of our property, near woods and wetlands, so i wanted to move them quicker than later. and i was planning on just fencing in a small area until the ground accepted the seed...

    converting farm land to pasture

we just purchased 6 acres next to our property that has been used in a rotating crop for years. we want to put up a goat structure and move our boer goats to that land since it is higher ground and dryer. need recommendations: do we need to seed in pasture before we put them there? i'm thinking...

New to sheep! Got 3 lambs today!

we got the lambs as feeder lambs because we don't want to over winter livestock here in mid-michigan. i'd love some ewes (and pregnant ones, especially!), but we don't really have the facilities for overwintering; just a shelter for them from the sun and a small pen area inside a larger pen...
