Ok, so this is not a topic I really enjoy talking about, but it's all for a good reason.
My American buck has a testicle that seems to be receeding, turning a darker color on the end, and shriveling up, and I don't know why! Could it just be the weather? It's getting colder around here. Or could...
Yay!!! As to the Orange holland, has she been around any bucks by any chance, or has she already been bred a few days before, or is she late on giving birth from a previous breeding? If no to all these questions , than does she have a dewlap (roll of skin and fur) under her neck? If not then she...
It should work, if you've read the Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits, he actually recommends breeding smaller bucks with larger does. He states that breeding a larger buck could actually be fatal to the doe, depending on how much larger the buck actually is. If the buck is much larger there is a...
Yes, I try to buy only pedigreed rabbits, but Candy is the only one I have that isn't pedigreed, although she is purebred (I absolutely could NOT resist buying the little sweety, hence the name "Candy") I do also pedigree the baby Blues I sell.
I prefer Blues, but I'm also starting in The Rex breed. Sounds like you breed the smaller varieties? I think they are much cuter and easier to handle than my giant 15-18 pounders.
My brother had a rabbit with ear mites really bad one time. We just used cheap vegetable oil to cure it. One thing's for sure, if it's had them for a while in their ear and it's built up, be prepared to step back from the cage as soon as you squirt the oil in. Once they feel that oil running...
In all honesty, he prefers chickens over rabbits, so he has slowly eliminated his herd. He did have a total of 11 rabbits at one point in time, but is now down to 2 and will probably be selling Phantom soon. He is having a hard time deciding whether or not to keep his girl Midnight or not. I...
You're right Becca, it just depends on the rabbit. Midnight, my brother's rabbit, literally hates everyone but him, and Midnight's momma Ivory* was the same way. I think 9 times out of 10 their moods are just hereditary.
* Yes, you can get different colors in the American breed even when bred...
Thanks ya'll! Luckily, my 2 girls Bella and Dixie didn't eat their first-timers, they all survived. So maybe it has something to do with the owner. Hmmmmmmm, I think I might have to tease my bro a little on this one. ;)
Nice to meet you Becca! It's good to know there are other young adults out there who are willing to raise animals and work around the farm! Many kids our age aren't interested in this kind of stuff anymore.
Thank you all for your comments! They are greatly appreciated. :)
Dixie did give birth to 4 fat healthy babies, 2 boys and 2 girls, and they all survived. Bella, on the other hand, had a false breed/pregnancy, so after a rebreed she gave birth 3 weeks later to 8 babies, of which only 5 of them...
I am interested in seeing what all your responses are. :)
So why exactly do YOU raise rabbits?
I raise them for meat mostly, but I do raise some to sell as pets and breeders, and I consider my own breeders to be pets. I also use their manure as compost in our garden and yard (it is the only...
