    Tre3hugger's Rabbit Thread

Glad to hear you're off to a roaring success with your market rabbit program! Hope for better luck with you and Momma than you did with Crewella (but glad to see she'll still be running around).

    What color is this?

It looks almost Harlequin-like based on the face split, but with the lighter belly I'm thinking something in the agouti family? Maybe like an Amber that is also realllyyyy smutty.

    Best breed of rabbits?

Agreed with Kusanar, really depends on what your goal(s) is with your herd. With 50 accepted breeds for showing (and more that are either in the works or just enjoyed by people), there is a lot of variety and a breed (or two) that works best for everyone.

    Dutch rabbit color genetics

I very much like this article HERE about color genetics. Like promiseacres and Bunnylady said, I agree that when starting to stick with one variety. Once you're established and have a line going, you can for sure try adding in a COMPATIBLE color and try your hand with it to add some variety, but...

    Babies in the winter

Here in Minnesota, the only extra thing I'll do is 'shelf' the nest box of babies in the heated garage until I go do chores. Then while feeding everyone I pop the box in with the doe, she feeds them, then I put them back in the garage when I'm done. I do also cover them with a towel with an...

    Jake's Journal ~ Navigating Life

Well that odd... thing is still there this week, but I had a friend over shortly after posting and they said it looks like the same mold they've had at their place. Not sure which I would prefer, mold or fungus. Either way it's outside and not in the barn with the rabbits so I'm content with that.

I thought that PayPal was supposed to be more secure as well since they didn't have access directly to your bank account. I don't use it myself so I'm not sure entirely how PayPal works though. Anyways, while cleaning out the barn today, I looked down by the manure pile to see what I thought...

    Jake's Journal ~ Navigating Life

Thank you everyone! Especially for the great advice! My internship site did hire me so now I've been working two jobs for the past month. It's been burning me out quite a bit but I'm backing down on the retail one so that I can still enjoy my life. My bank account also likes having two jobs...

    Jake's Journal ~ Navigating Life

Yay! Back after another super long hiatus (I really need to stop taking them). So I guess to catch up on here: 1) Sold all 5 of my llamas last fall so I could move to another town for school. I miss them, but it was the smart move in the end. 2) Still have rabbits thankfully, my mother is...

    Meat Rabbit feeding sugestions

Welcome to the world of rabbits! First off, New Zealand rabbits are all one breed (show-wise are available in black, blue (I believe this got passed this year), broken, red, and white). Whites are just most commonly used for commercial programs as the fur shows up on meat and you can dye he fur...

LocoYokel's kindling thread (aka What the ???)

Just to tack on some extra information, I believe does only have 8 teats, so the 2 smaller kits are likely fighting each other for the last teat. And yes, once they have eyes open and can move around better, they'll chase mom for a meal and eat some pellets and hay and should catch up eventually.

Moving mom and week old kit

You should be okay moving her into the new cage. I recommend moving her in the mid- to late-morning as she's going to be more active around dusk and dawn and she'll have the rest of the day to settle in. Watch her for a bit after you move her and check in periodically. I wouldn't give her the...

*new question* Is this a common thing?

I believe your dogs will be safe. Just wash your hands after interacting with your new bun. Congrats on getting a blue Silver Fox!

    Birthing problems

Sadly, there is little to no chance that she will have any live ones this time around, leaning mostly towards no chance. The prolonged dystocia (difficulty giving birth) can be caused by a variety of factors. If the doe is too young or of immature size, if she's older than (generally) a year...

    Indoor vs outdoor rabbitry

Some things to think about: Why do you want 2 breeds? Especially when neither are similar except for their size and their use as a meat rabbit. Their colors, fur, and body structure are different. If you're just starting ok I recommend starting with one breed and building up from there after a...

    Jake's Kindling Thread

Thank you @Hens and Roos and @Latestarter Well, things have sadly hit a bump now. I've lost 3 older kits due to getting chilled. They were outside the cages on the floor. Tried to revive one but it was gone. And then some good news tied to bad news. I got my last litter for this round! She...
