I am in the exact same plight you are in now. I calculated from the time we had the billy wethered (2 days after we got him) and the latest should be around the 13th of June. It is so hard to tell for me but I am such a newbie at this with goats.
LOL. I thought about that but haven't quite convinced my DH of that. Can't move too quickly you know. First chickens, then cows, now goats, a sheep that has fallen into our hands.... maybe one more year. Room isn't the problem its the fence building....
Thanks for all the ideas and help. I will take it slow and assess the situation carefully as it comes up. Initially, they will be separate but will share a fence line. I just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing anything that I would need to consider before trying.
Pigmy's have horns, sheep is a Kthand (sp?) I have worked with the farmer I am getting from for several years and she is almost certified organic and she practices good biosecurity. I have gotten chickens from her before and they were healthy and excellent quality. I can set them up in...
I have been looking and can't seem to find the posts related to this topic. I have 3 young pigmy goats approximately 5 mo old. I have been offered a single baby bottle fed lamb (ram) who is about 2 weeks old. I will be raising the lamb for meat, so he will only be with us for about 6-8...
Good news. The billy is now a whether, the girls are not pregnant and the children have almost got them trained to walk on a lead. Now it's time to work on a portable pen so they can get to work...
Thanks for the information. The vet comes out Thursday. (Couldn't get him any sooner due to the holidays) I didn't realize he would need to be separate for 6 weeks afterward. I thought it was just a few days. will get him set up.
Okay, so I am brand new to goats as we have just brought home 3 little pigmy goats. Two doelings and a buckling (soon to be whether) all about 4 1/2 mo old. They are for my children who are 11 and 15 years old. My son (10) has chosen the buckling as his own, my daughter one of the doelings...
I agree on the forage and pasture section. I have always heard that good cattle farmers are good grass growers first. As a hobby farmer the care and maintenance of my pastures has been the hardest learning curve for me. I am fortunate to have 24 acres so there is leeway for the learning curve...
We do have a bush hog and will cut it down. I am encouraging my DH to bush hog more than twice a year this year now that DD is old enough to mow with the riding mower this year. That means two of us to handle the small mower freeing DH to run the bush hog.
I want to thank everyone for your suggestions. My reasoning was to know ALL the different options so that I could make the best decision for our situation. With a background in science I know that all chemicals are not the same and that is the research that I was hoping to find out. I also...
I understand about that bad cycle. We have been hobby farming for quite a few years and have been researching goats for a few years. I want to get enough to do the jobs I need them to do. (get rid of brush on our 24 acres, maybe milk, maybe meat. ) I don't want to get too many but just...
I have about a 10 acre field that was unused this winter. I looked at it the other day and it is completely covered in blackberry vines. I try not to use any more chemicals on the farm than necessary but it is starting to look like Sleeping Beauties castle. What is the best way to get rid of...
