Best way to keep calves safe?

I guess the part I like about a donkey is I would like one even if they were a dud haha. We had one on my parents farm for years. He passed away at 40 years old just last winter. We have always wanted to replace him but we have actually had a really hard time finding one. Id like a standard...

Best way to keep calves safe?

No. I haven’t. Well I guess I have always known it’s possible but I really don’t want another dog haha. I have 2 very old ones and they take up way too much time. With a 2 year old. But we just bought a new place and are building a house and I think when it’s done next spring I will add a...

Best way to keep calves safe?

Thank you! It was very sad! We had planned to keep them and breed them. Purchased them from a friend. Were hoping to use them for mutton busting practice for my son as well. Im too scared to get more now. A few years back the same thing happened. We used wire and electrical line, locked them...

Best way to keep calves safe?

I raise bottle calves in the same area that I raise my sheep herd. My entire sheep herd got killed by coyotes. I have never lost a calf. We have coyotes, deer, cougars, bobcats, etc. Never lost one.

    Where to get calves?

I have done exactly what you are trying to do. I bought 20 bottle calves and raised them up on a bottle. Farmerjan is right...it will not in the end save you money. Especially if you raise them the way I believe they should be raised. In my 20 I had 14 heifers. Of those 14, 6 of them want on...

    Keeping multiple breeds?

We have kept sheep of different breeds. The only concern I can personally see is a size thing. Just like any animal the small ones always get picked on. So when it comes to feeding time its something to consider I suppose. This year my entire herd of sheep got taken out by coyotoes. One after...

    I'm Back :)

I did sell her! I sold her to a couple that lives up northern BC and they are using her and her last calf for milk! Was really a great place to send her off. They use her milk to make Paneer for the local Punjabi community. I see you on cattle today as well Jan! My son is about 2.5 thanks for...

    What would your note say?

We have a booth at the top of our farm where we sell eggs, produce, flowers etc. Every single week someone comes and steals from us. We lose about 6-10 dozen eggs a week to theft. Its the honor system. You take what you want from the fridge and you drop your money down the spout. I want to...

    Dairy without the calf removing

Thank you so much @Donna R. Raybon and @farmerjan this has given me a lot to think about. I am not sure what breed I would go after. I have never dealt with Holsteins but I have with Jersey's. I do feel confident tho that regardless of weather I could care for both breeds without issue. I am...

    Dairy without the calf removing

So I have been playing around with an idea. Right now our family farm makes money two ways, eggs and cows. We no longer sell beef we sell cows. But it has me thinking about another business, something I know very little about. Can anyone share with me what they know about the possibility of...

    New Mini Jersey, have questions

First you'll teach her how to be on the halter then once she calves you'll teach her how not to kick you in the face :D =D

    New Mini Jersey, have questions

You'll keep busy halter training her and such. The easiest way I found to halter train my jerseys is to just tie them up each morning for grain. I would halter them, feed them grain, then walk them around for a minute or two after. They learned quick when they knew that the halter meant grain...

    New Mini Jersey, have questions

Congrats! Jersey's are the sweetest. We have a couple and just love them. When I start out any cow I give them an 8 way vaccine and also give them tetanus. I always make sure those shots are up to date but I live in BC, Canada. Best thing to do is call your local vet and ask what they suggest...

    A diary of our farm

That I’m not sure they just told me the head was twisted on the way out and caused major issues. I know the calf had a bit of recovering to do from the strain on the neck after the fact. They first told me the calf might not make it then next day said it was doing well. Do you think the calf...

    A diary of our farm

The hooves were visible. And interesting enough its head was twisted in such a way they said it wasn't just the position of the body that made it tough it was also the position of the head. I did have a calf last year that was full breech with just the butt visible. That's what first indicated...

    A diary of our farm

Hi All! I just wanted to make a place to put all my updates on our farm. This year we have done something different. All of our mama cows from previous years are no longer (except one) and this year all my pregnant girls are heifers. I did something new for us and I raised Holstein X Black...

    Calf Prices!

I also buy bottle calves/dairy cow calves from local dairy farms and raise them to sell. I never sell by weight because it's not worth it where we are from for a cow like that. Honestly, an 8 month old Holstein bull calf id give you $80-$200 for it depending on the season. I don't even think id...

What is your routine with a new calf

Yes sorry we do an iodine dip. Thank you I will double check to see if I am using the right kind. We are very paranoid about the navel because like I said I have had a few die from navel ill and joint ill.

What is your routine with a new calf

How long do you think is too long to clean the navel? I let this calf be alone with the mama cow for a good 6 hours before I cleaned him up. Which is the longest I have let it go.
