Do alpacas need another of their kind to thrive? Thinking of getting one. He is male, intact, 11 years old. I currently do not have another herd animal. Just muscovies, chickens, and geese, a dog, cat, and us (two adults). He's being sold as a pet.
On one side the wax was sticking to the tiny feathers and totally blocking the earhole. But it's now a moot issue. I was cleaning his ears every few days and now after checking him two days in a row, his ears are perfectly clean.
I will continue to keep an eye on his ears.
I don't think most chicken flock owners regularly check all of their birds' ears, unless they're pets. I only checked his ears because he likes to be held sometimes, and the day I was holding him I just decided to look at his ears.
I noticed recently that my five year old rooster named Cali, has excessive wax or pus build up that gathers on the opening of his ears. It's solid and dry, and when I clean it off notice that there is no oozing on the inside of the ear, and there is no redness, no odor at all. I'm not going to...
But that doesn't heal the jaw. I was curious about what is done when a jaw is broken and found this:

As well as other articles. Even though on people, bones heal the same on all mammals. The articles all basically state that a minor...
We already have too many fences around here. We have to keep the chickens from going were they get killed, keep foxes out, keep deer and rabbits out of the gardens. You are right though @Latestarter, the pond shouldn't determine what livestock animals to keep, just figure out how to make it work.
That is great information to know about the liver flukes. Since we got the four ducks the water is dirty most of the time, and haven't noticed as many snails. The plan for spring through fall is to irrigate the gardens with the nitrogen rich pond water, then re-fill the ponds with the well...
Thanks for the replies. I have Muscovies, which we just got over the summer. Our chickens are Dominiques, and some mixed breeds. The Dominiques will be bred with our Buff Orpington mix cockerel for a mixed breed that is a great layer, beautiful, smart, and can tell from chick if male or female.
Thanks Latestarter. I have rocks almost all the way around the second pond, but don't want them to step into the shallow part. One previous home owner here had problems with their sheep going into the marsh and getting stuck in the mud. Possibly sheep will not be the right herd animal to get.
We are considering getting some Shetland sheep, and have two man-made ponds. Do sheep tend to stay away from the ponds besides drinking the water? The concern is keeping hooves off the pond liner. The edges are protected by rocks. Thanks.
Hi, I live in lower Michigan, and have chickens and ducks. I am considering Shetland sheep for pets, lawn mowing, and of course wool. We have a man-made pond for the ducks, and the question I have is will the sheep tend to stay away from the pond?
