Nigerian Dwarfs are year-round breeders potentially, but not always. Many do not have heats every 21 days year-round. They can tend to skip during the summer. Most of my does do not really have heats in the summer. They usually kid around May - June, and then come back in heat around...
To answer your original question, I have heard that the Flat Rocks bloodlines have a lot of slow-maturing goats. I have a buckling who’s grand-dam is from Flat Rocks, and he indeed is quite a slow maturer. Both his sire and dam are heavy NDs, but he weighed 23lbs at 6 months old. He only started...
Do they have access to pasture/browse? If so, then that is what they are eating and it’s normal for them not to eat a lot of dried hay if they have access to fresh plants. Their weight is in the normal range. Look up body condition scoring to tell if they are too thin or not.
Yes, sorry. I was in a hurry to reply, that I was focusing just on the rumen aspect. I meant that the fact that his rumen is larger than is normal. I agree, her buckling is still quite thin. He is getting better though!
Thank you about my goats :)
I just remembered that when I first posted, I was going to get 2 registered does, and maybe a wether. I ended up getting 3 registered does and 2 registered bucks. They all live together, with the boys have buck aprons on. It’s been working well, and as long as it continues to be this way, they...
I didn’t read all the comments, but your goat now looks perfectly fine. In the before picture he was way too thin. Please don’t keep giving dewormers or medications without a fecal test, otherwise you can create parasite resistance. All goats have parasites, you just don’t want more than a...
Hi again!
I thought I would post an update since it’s been a while. We’ve now moved into our new house and added lots of animals. We have a lot more quails, new chickens (unfortunately we couldn’t keep the ones we used to have), and we now have 5 registered Nigerian Dwarf goats, and will be...
She seems to have a steep rump, but they can level out with age. She’s not yet full grown, and when they grow in length, it automatically levels their rump. I’ve been told to wait until 1 year old to have a better idea of a goat’s rump. For example, one of my bucklings had a decent rump last...
Yea, once we are settled in, we will try to see if anything can be done. When we sold our current house, we had to fill a paper that asks if it's zoned conservation (or other things) and the buyers needed to sign it too. We never got that paper.
But where I live isn't that cold compared to most...
That's exactly what I've read too. I emailed the breeder to explain the reasons very politely, but never heard back so I won't be taking the wether, unfortunately. The doeling is for sure though!
Tomorrow I should receive pictures of a new doeling and wether that I might buy! I hope they will...
Haha Baymule, can you tell I've been lurking?
We are having a house built, and on the same street there are many houses that will be built by the same builder but they have wooded lots (we bought our land by ourselves previously, the others are buying it with the builder). We asked the...
Hi everyone!
I've had chickens and quails for around 2 years in the city (where we aren't actually allowed any). We are now moving to the countryside and having a house built on 8 acres. We will be getting Nigerian Dwarf goats, and perhaps in the future have sheep, turkeys, ducks, and guineas...
Wow, that's a ton of animals! You also forgot your sheep in that list. If your dad's girlfriend wants bees, will she be taking care of them?
You need to convince your dad to keep your doeling! 1) she's adorable and 2) you need at least 2 goats so that newton isn't lonely, and 3) as...
Thank you! I agree, since I will be cuddling and spending lots of time with the goats, I don't want to be worried all the time. This way, they will have a long and happy life with me.
Thank you! I love his little "attitude" he has in the second picture. His dad is very friendly and within a...
Yes, I will be getting 3 goats, he's just the first to be born. I was planning on getting 2 doelings, but I prefer herd animals to be at least 3, so I'm getting a whether (much less expensive).
I know this is a somewhat older post, but just in case someone is looking for this again, I'll answer.
Caustic paste shouldn't be used because it can rub on the mother's udder or on the kid's siblings. It can also get in their eyes if it rains on them, and it's also painful over a long period...
