    Coughing goat

I have a doe who has been coughing for a few weeks now and I’m having trouble figuring out what to do and why. She is new to the herd and has gotten hit a few times pretty hard in the ribs by my herd queen so I’m concerned about that maybe doing damage. When I bought her she had just been tested...

    Do goats need grain?

Sounds like the best thing I could do would be to just see what happens over the next couple years and educate myself more in the meantime. Her teats and udder are small but soft and easy to milk. I’m not planning to show or anything so I’m not too concerned if I never see off the charts...

    Do goats need grain?

Oh wow. That is a lot more than I have been getting. Good for them! Sounds like you have good blood in your herd. Perhaps I should plan on investing in a better doe. Thanks for the help!

    Do goats need grain?

It’s been hard to figure out what to expect. I did as much research as I could but everyone had a different opinion. Could you give me an idea of what I should expect? I don’t really have anything to compare her with or any idea of what a decent doe should produce. I just want a family milk goat...

    Do goats need grain?

I think I’ll just skip the grain then and watch for issues. Everything I read said that a doe in milk would waste away without grain so I was afraid to stop and not sure what to do. I’ll just keep a close eye on their condition and see how it goes. I think I’m just paranoid because I don’t...

    Do goats need grain?

Oh, and she isn’t noisy just in heat. She actually gets quiet during her cycle and turns in to a blubbering goof who acts like a buck

    Do goats need grain?

Well I’m glad it’s not just me. I am a do your homework and follow the book to the letter type so I reasearched as much as I could find and have been super strict with my routine. I literally have and alarm on my phone and go milk at the exact same time every day. I have been milking twice a day...

    Do goats need grain?

Thanks for the ideas. I will try upping the alfalfa pellets to give them more protein as well as spending more time with them. Yes, I know that it’s best to make changes gradually and typically do. I dropped the grain all at once but I was desperate for some peace and quiet. I have Nigerian...

    Do goats need grain?

Just to clarify, are you thinking the problem may be that they aren’t getting enough protein and they are yelling because they are hungry? I did try out several types of hay because they are picky and won’t eat just anything. They were getting alfalfa for a while but they didn’t like it so I...

    Do goats need grain?

I have a bit of a problem. My property is very small and by necessity the goat pen is really close to my house. I’ve wanted dairy goats for a while and in January I finally got a couple of two year old does. I only bred one so as not to overwhelm myself as I learned to milk. She had triplets in...

    Tiny runt kid. Bottle feed?

Quick update: the little guy is doing great! He has grown a lot and is still loving his bottles. I will continue to supplement until he is weaned just to be sure that he is getting the nutrition he needs. Mom seems to have plenty of milk though so no issues there.

    Tiny runt kid. Bottle feed?

The little guy finally figured out nursing from mom. I’ll continue the bottle for a while just to be sure he is getting enough and I am keeping him in the house at night because it is still getting pretty cool and I doubt he would find mom in the dark to nurse. He is still wobbly but he’s...

    Tiny runt kid. Bottle feed?

Woah. That is a huge difference in size! Amazing that her brother didn’t squish the poor thing before they were born. Good to know that she pulled through and did well. This little guy is a fighter. He has been so much more active today and keeps trying to nurse from mom. My hope is that he will...

    Tiny runt kid. Bottle feed?

I did try pulling the other kids out and letting the weak kid nurse but the trouble is he can’t really nurse on his own. The doe is making plenty of milk though so I have been milking out a little colostrum and bottle feeding the weak kid every couple hours. It is her milk he is getting so she...

    Tiny runt kid. Bottle feed?

My ND doe just had triplets. This is her first kidding and she is doing great caring for her babies. The last kid was only 1lb 6oz and he seems to be having trouble nursing. He can’t compete with two siblings that are twice his size abd he seems unable to find the teat. He tries but even when...

    Starting from scratch

So I have heard. I’ve been told posts need to be on the outside of the fence and leave nothing climbable inside near the fence. The plan is to use tips like you just gave me to build an impenetrable wall... maybe, until they figure out how to get out and we find out what we missed :th

    Starting from scratch

Awesome info. Thank you! Woven wire sounds great. I would hate to build a fence only to find out that they can get out. I like my veggies. If chickens can destroy them in minutes I can only imagine a goat :ep

Annoying Things Non Goat People Say

You know, this discussion is very educational for someone like me who is just getting started with goats. Now I know exactly what NOT to say
