My husband and I finally took the plunge into goat ownership! He purchased these two sweet does for me for Valentines day, talk about a perfect present!!
We have Charlie or "Char" a Myotonic pregnant doe due sometime end of this month or next month.
Then we also have "Daisy" the Pygmy...
We are going to be getting goats sometime between now and spring, we are just waiting for the perfect ones to come along! Thus far I have been pretty set on getting Pygmy goats, I always have liked them and they are really where the love began.
I have also been considering long term goals for...
Around here we end up with a couple new cats a year, whether they just be true feral or owner dumps. We have programs here to get them spayed/neutered but there still is usually some cost. I just take the approach to get them fixed and I try to rehome them or they earn their keep. My husband is...
Yes exactly! I use to do something like it for our horses all the time but on a larger scale! I have seen people do it a few ways, taking cheap hard bristle brushes and drilling them and then screwing them into a post, I've seen people use push broom heads so they're bigger (so this would be...
Oh. My. Gosh.
I think this comment almost made me die. I haven't laughed that hard in so long...So much for trying to sneak reading some threads in the office before I start work for the day
Currently, I do not have any desire to milk them. Down the road that could change and if it does I can add to the farm at that point. We are also going to look into moving to more land in the next 5 years or so, we just want to put a dent in our mortgage before we decide to make any big changes...
Honest main reason is because I just like them. I have been around goats quite a bit in the past and I like them all but the pygmies were always my favorite. Then being a small size really helps since my kids are young.
I have been reaching out to a couple breeders just to put my feelers out...
I will start reaching out. My oldest is still a couple years off showing so I most certainly have time when it comes to that thankfully. I'll see what we can find and go from there. I most certainly wouldn't be opposed to a couple unregistered right now and go from there. I know last time I...
We are stuck between pygmies and nigerians but I think we are leaning more towards pygmy currently. I've tossed around the idea with down the road having more than one breed but for now it'll be one of the two. My original plan was to purchase early this spring just to make it easier on hay...
Brushing them is always a fun thing for kids and it also allows the goats positive hands on time with the family. :) Something else you can do is if you have any strong fence posts is you can attach brushes to them so the goats can rub on them. This will help the goats remove some of it on their...
Hello! With all animals it sometimes takes a while for them to get use to each other. There is a few factors that are at play here. She could be missing her buddy since it is so recent and she's running off the newcomer. I prefer to let all my animals meet for the first time on neutral ground...
I'm glad to know it can be done! I think I am use to stallion horses and intact male dogs that are just jerks around other intact males. I definitely have some space I can always separate as needed down the road.
Do you guys think it will have better luck with raising two together versus...
I like this idea, we have the space we could easily separate them if needed as well into their own paddocks if worst came to worst. Long term goals is to have a nice little breeding program going for the time my kids reach 4H age (the oldest is only a couple years off). I love goats and always...
This isn't a problem just with goats. Even my human children would fall asleep when they're eating their bottle. I actually had a really hard time with one of themas they weren't getting enough to eat! But back to goat talk!
It'll be hard but try different things to keep her awake like...
