It would be an uphill battle all the way. The environmentalists would be screaming about fencing the land, giving the land to farmers, grazing, and just about anything else you can imagine. I can't see the government doing any of it. Currently the largest sheep farmers already graze on huge...
It was a joy and relief. Before that I was wondering if any of the training was working at all, or how we were going to do this since she didn't respond to treats. But she's doing great; so responsive to praise and attention.
Our LGD hated the leash when we first got her; breeder had never put a collar or leash on her. We left the collar on 24/7, but eventually switched to a harness as it gives us more control and doesn't choke her. She is not food motivated at all, but we found she is motivated to get out of her...
I have one that I was worried about, too. Has a larger abdomen than the others, but it's not firm if I push on her and she's in no distress. She's also much larger than the others all the way around so I wasn't sure if it's normal or not. Been just keeping an eye on her and no changes. Should we...
We put ours on large-breed puppy food. It is not always easy to find though. I was also told to not overfeed, to keep her lean as she is growing to prevent hip dysplasia.
Congratulations! We just got our first goats 3 weeks ago (meat goats) so we're right there with you. This group is awesome, full of good advice and lots of encouragement! We had an injury right off the bat, blood everywhere, but we and the goat survived and doing great. We get quite a kick out...
Here's some pictures of our set-up. We were using a 10 x 10 kennel, but we both work so she has to spend a lot of time in it. Since these dogs can take 2 years or more before they can be trusted alone with the stock and she isn't yet 4 months old, we decided she needed more room. Last Saturday...
Got the goats finally last Saturday. Five females so far, with another coming next month. (A late surprise.) Baptism by fire, or maybe I should say blood. Wednesday after dinner my husband found one of the goats bleeding profusely from her ear. She kept shaking her head so blood was EVERYWHERE...
Thanks for your honesty! We do plan to start with 4-5 does and expand from there. I'm a nurse and have no problems giving vaccinations, drawing blood, etc. once someone shows me the right way to do this on a goat vs. a human. :D =D Only one large animal vet here covering a huge area, so thinking...
Interesting that you have a guard llama. We were originally going that route, but several people around here who've had them have said they weren't enough so we've been looking at dogs. Glad to hear it's working for you! Maybe we'll keep our options open.
Have done very large garden in years past; it was too much for me last year while working so this year will be only a few items and only enough to eat, no canning. :-( We were going to start off with 4-5 goats to get our feet wet and hopefully grow from there. I feel for your wife, my husband...
Wow, thanks for all your thoughtful answers! I should be able to quit work in a year or two. My husband has a good job but we have a kid in college and are about to put in fencing, barn, etc., plus the old tractor is on its last leg, which is why I need to keep working a while longer. My husband...
We are getting ready to get our goats, but not sure I'm ready to give up my paying job. How many of you juggle a full-time job in addition to raising goats or other livestock? Is someone in your family a full-time farmer? Advice? Opinions? Drawbacks?
