Please help. Yeah I know it's a long shot, but I still want to try.

Hey sweetie. Good for you for taking the time to calculate out costs and prepare yourself. When the time comes for you to have a horse you will be ready. I agree with the posters who say your folks know best but you can still dream and prepare. One thing you may need to be careful about is...

    He BIT me! OooooooUCH! (Picture)

You just found your reason. Forgive me for being harsh but I really feel I should be straight with you before you or someone around you gets hurt worse than that bite. 1. Getting on an untried horse while it is tied is a recipe for disaster. If he objects and bucks you off you can be caught...

First equine, donkey or a horse?

For a first equine, I would recommend leasing or part-boarding a horse before making the decision to buy one and bring it home. Learning to care for and to ride a horse is a steep learning curve and the information may be a bit of an overload. You can "practice" on your lease horse and also...

*!!!BLM Plans to Sterilize All Wild Horses in 2 HMA in Wyoming!!!*

It is incredibly important to maintain the herd health of the population of wild mustangs in the US. They are lovely animals and a rich part of the cultural history of the country. However, allowing numbers to exceed the carrying capacity of the area they inhabit is dangerous in the extreme...

Pllleeeeaaaassseeee start a how-to thread just for us working horse keeners. Ha ha- I guess it would be pages and pages and lots of work. But if you had any special pointers, please do share your knowledge. :)

    Pictures Of YOUR Horses...!!!

OMG Snips and Balley are awesome! I wish we were neighbours so I could learn more about working a field with horses. I am going to a clinic in a few weeks to learn some technique. My Clyde is broke to drive single and double so putting him to the plough should be pretty easy (I hope!). I...

Stuffing a quilt with fleece (and other things to do with raw fleeces)

Correct. And boy did it hurt to give it away :). I'm working on a crazy quilt at the moment. All modern materials (silk and wool) and a few of the squares have animals stuffed with wool. It will eventually have a thin layer of my wool batting too. I love working with wool from my sheep- I...

Stuffing a quilt with fleece (and other things to do with raw fleeces)

I should have taken pictures! It turned out really nicely. It was a black wool backing with hundreds of tiny coloured silk yoyos. It was later Victorian as the colours were the bright jewel tones you get from the aniline dyes. A lot of the fabric held up surprisingly well but obviously the...

Can sheep and horses live together?

Sheep and horses don't share the same pest and disease pressures so they are a great fit. The sheep will also graze down some of the weeds and undesirable grasses that the picky horses won't touch. Some horses will chase the sheep or are frightened of them at first but after a while they...

I need some advice on raising pigs

Dennis, You are right on. I am impressed with your determination and your willingness to work. I am in Canada and this recession may not have hit us as hard as you folks but it hit us just the same. I am sad and a little angry that ten strong, able-bodied men are wanting to work and can't...

    my daughters blind pony

Your story gave me goosebumps! It is so touching and inspirational to see a remarkable young woman giving a new lease on life to a remarkable pony :). They are both beautiful. I feel compelled to add something and I really hope I don't offend. Your daughter should wear her riding helmet...

Stuffing a quilt with fleece (and other things to do with raw fleeces)

You can also make a yoyo quilt. This is where you stuff individual tiny squares with wool and stitch them together. I recently repaired an old Victorian carriage yoyo quilt which was made out of silk and wool. A few of the silk squares had shattered so I put in new and stuffed with my wool...

    Pictures Of YOUR Horses...!!!

Ha ha ha! Valley Ranch I love your "horse!" I love everyone's pics- especially the drafties and the little Halflinger. They are just gorgeous and all so obviously loved. Here are two of my guys, Laurel and Oakley. My other horse is a Clyde named Raider. I give up on trying to get photos...

Get rid of horse flies with garlic??

We recently started using Barrier supplement on the horses. We don't generally have a huge amount of flies so we thought a natural product would take care of them easily. It's got garlic in it, diatomaceous earth, and some other stuff. I'll let you know how it works out :).

    THINKING ABOUT GETTING SHEEP

That's a good question, Pat. I think any sheep leaving your farm has to have the radio tag and any new sheep born on the farm has to have it. This was supposed to start January 2012 but I have learned it's being pushed up a bit. Here is the official story...

    THINKING ABOUT GETTING SHEEP

Also important to know, at least in my area (southern Ontario) you are required to have the new radio tags by next year.

    Pasture question

Hey there. Let me just say your place looks like a goat haven. They're going to love it. I agree with the posters who have encouraged you to fence the goats out of the stream/marsh area. It's best for the health of the goats and for the health of the environment as well. I don't know...

Big Brag section for your LGD's and working dogs purebred or not :o)

This is Orlando. He's a Doberman X Coon Hound. He's an excellent guard dog and he takes very good care of his "pack" of horses, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, and donkeys. He's getting on in age but it hasn't slowed him down at all...
