I have A small flock of Babydoll (wool) sheep, and they have always been housed with my Goats and my donkeys/pony. There has never been a problem, for 6 years. I make sure that there is no copper in the mineral I leave out and I bolus the goats. Everyone gets along, but the goats and the...
I know they are originally from Switzerland, but I was hoping someone had imported them with a breeding program here. I wonder how hard it is to get sheep shipped in from Europe........... :/
Thanks for the kind words! I am so relieved it is healing well. It just looks like a large gash now, and no signs of infection. In terms of the dog, this was human error. Not the dog's fault. He is an old, large dog and did not grow up around livestock. He has never tried to get through...
I have Babydolls and they share a pasture and barn with a pony, donkey goat and chickens. Everyone gets alone well, but I learned the hard way to keep them apart during feeding time. My ewe lost half an ear to the pony, so now I have a "creep" area where the sheep and goats can escape and they...
Here's a picture from today of the sheep's leg, after 5 days of treatment. Not healed, but better.
Here's the original image for comparison, right after injury:
Thanks for the advice everyone....I was going to suture it, but the vet told me not to since it was a bite wound and he was more worried about an abscess than the exposed flesh. I am most concerned about flies, though, thankfully, the temperature has dropped to the 60's here. Hopefully that...
Well, one of my large dogs got in the pasture and got a hold of my Babydoll wether's leg. This is the right rear. I have washed it out, sprayed with Vetricyn, applied Swat around it to keep the flies off, and he has gotten 2 doses of Pen G (the large animal vet I called was not interested in...
Thanks for the responses! I bought the 1500 U single doses vials of the anti-toxin, so do they get all 1500 U? That seems like a lot. It is the Equine derived anti-toxin, and it does say the preventive dose in sheep is 1500, but I thought that was for the adults. They are so cute, I don't...
Fiona my Babydoll X Suffolk ewe, had triplets last Saturday (lambs are 8 days old). It was a bit of a surprise, since I knew she was pregnant, but didn't expect the lambs until May. SO, she didn't get boostered with CDT. Now, I am going to band the tails tomorrow, do I give the lambs Tetanus...
For the record, my mini-donk is NOT mean, he is a sweetheart, but I am sure temperament has something to do with handling. My pony is the one you have to watch out for. I vote donkey....
Our donkey HATES the cold here in Nebraska, but is fine in the heat. As long as he has dirt to roll in for his "bath", he's good. His buddy the fat little Shetland sweats like a pig and stands in the water trough in the summer and we can't get him out of the snow in the winter.
Congrats on your beautiful donkeys! :love I feed mine the same as my pony, free choice hay in the winter and fall, pasture in the summer and spring, MINIMAL treats (they get fat easily) and a very small daily amount of supplement for minerals etc (I feed Purina Enrich 12). They end up with...
Sorry for reviving an older post, but I have a question about the "corrects you all were talking about with the butting. My Baby Doll ram butts, especially in the AM when I fed everyone, and I am never sure HOW to correct him. I stay away from his face (ie, no nose swats) but what should I be...
I have a follow up question -- How often do you need to give the Copasure? I gave my 2 pygmy's their first dose this Spring, and I am pretty sure they were already copper deficient (they had fish-tails), but when do I need to give them more? Thanks
MY little lamb's name is Einstein! I don't know where my husband came up with the name, but he looked at him and pronounced him Einstein! My Aunt (a vet), said "wishfully thinking....". Regarding the wether, I did him at 3 weeks, and I had the vet surgically castrate him WITH sedation. He...
