No, it’s not the tenderloin, I think I just described it’s location badly. It’s kind of like part of the diaphragm. Basically, when gutting the beef, after pulling all the guts out there’s this muscle that is now visible. The tenderloin is still hidden behind all the leaf fat and kidneys. I...

It’s inside the gut cavity running along the spine from about the kidneys to the diaphragm.

Hi again! Feels like it’s been forever since I was here last. Summer on the homestead was as busy and fun as always. Right now is the time for beef! We spent the last couple weeks building a hanging shed made with cooler panels I got cheap at an auction. It needs a lot more work to get it how...

Should I put a roof over my rabbitry?

Operation “Roof the Rabbitry” has finally reached the top of the priority list! We started work on it last weekend by taking apart some old rafters that we bought at an auction for $1. We’ll roof it with some sheet metal that we also got cheap at an auction :) Hoping to get it done by...

    Are these Coccidia eggs?

Which one is the Coccidia egg? I thought these looked like Coccidia (circles below in red), but am just trying to compare to pictures online, so I don’t really know.

    Are these Coccidia eggs?

I am having recurring losses of my rabbits, probably due to Coccidiosis; but I’m not positive. In an effort to be sure, I’m trying to do fecals on the rabbits. I found what I think are some eggs, do these look like Coccidia eggs? Are there other eggs in these pictures? 400x power 100x power...

    Xerocles rabbit thread

That momma rabbit sounds like she’s going to be delicious. I’ve only had one first time doe lose her little and it was because I wrote the dates down wrong and she kindled a week earlier than I thought she was supposed to. Never had any issues with does not making a good enough nest to keep...

Am I Causing This Sore in My Goat’s Teat?

I bought my first milk goat a couple days ago. I’ve never milked anything before, so I’m learning as I go. The goat had sore on her right teat when I got her, which the previous owner said was from her milking when she had a cut on her hand. Something about the pain made her milk weird and...

I now have a milk goat!!!! :weee I’m really excited about this. We’ve been working on our homestead for 5 years now and have talked several times about getting a dairy animal. We kept putting it off though, for various reasons. We have a Hereford/Jersey mix heifer that we’ll be breeding this...

Thanks for the video! I made fermented feed for our chickens a couple years ago, but haven’t the last year or so. After watching that video I think I might have to start up again.

We’re going to butcher at least the black one after weaning, so I appreciate the advice!

We have pigs again! I was looking around for feeders and found a couple bred sows for sale. They’re both basically culls from a local small pig farmer, but hopefully they’ll farrow ok and we can get a gilt or two to raise up and breed. The black one has a pretty messed up looking teat. I don’t...

    Help with a colour?

He kinda looks like a black Tort to me, but I don’t know if his white paws change that. Maybe he has some Dutch way back in the pedigree or something? I’m not experienced enough to know his breed or color but I do know one thing, he is super cute! I bet he’ll throw some cute babies for you.

Hello again! After a long winter, DH and I are finally back to projects that are fun to post about again. We’ve been working on putting in a berry patch by the house. We have blackberries, raspberries, and black raspberries growing rampant in several areas around the property that we want to...

I have 5 does and 3 bucks right now. 2 broken black NZ does 1 solid black NZ doe 1 blue NZ doe 1 blue NZ buck 2 Calis, 1 buck and 1 doe 1 fawn mixed breed buck I haven’t bred my Californians to anyone other than each other to see what other colors they might have, but I get a lot of spots from...

Should I put a roof over my rabbitry?

That’s actually just a raised barrel so we can use gravity lines to water our rabbits. We fill it from the hose once a week or whenever needed. If I could figure out how to get rainwater up that high without a pump, I’d probably use it though. We’re pretty far from any major city so I wouldn’t...

    Help with a colour?

Whether or not you need a tort buck to breed to this doe just depends on what you want. If it was me, I’d breed to your current buck and see if he carries the non-extension gene (e); but if you need an excuse to buy another rabbit, then yes, you should get a tort buck 🤣 Depending on the...

    Help with a colour?

I actually have a litter now from a black doe and a fawn (the Agouti version of Tort) buck. I got lucky and the doe carries “e”, so I have a good mix of blacks and torts. I love the torts, your doe is very cute. Here’s the litter I mentioned:

    Help with a colour?

If you breed to a black buck, you’ll likely get mostly black kits. If the buck carries the recessive “e”, you could get more torts. And of course, you could get red-eyed whites, or several other colors based on any recessive color genes, but the chance of that is probably small

So we’re still sorting out car problems. DH fixed the wiring problem under the front seats, but the car still doesn’t start. It looks like maybe we were a little aggressive shoving the test leads into the starter relay holes, so we’re going to try putting in a new fuse/relay block and hopefully...
