    How to wean??

Through a series of events we ended up with 3 little Nigerian Dwarf bucklings. They are going tomorrow to the vet to have their horns removed and be castrated. One was born 12/11 and then we have twins born 12/26. We are feeding them Sav A Kid milk replacer right now. I googled weaning baby...

New to Goats - few questions

We do not need particularly large amounts of milk. I don't think we'd go through a gallon per day. My initial thoughts were to leave the kids with the dam during the day and just take them off at night and milk only in the mornings. I expect that would be more than an adequate amount for our...

New to Goats - few questions

Thank you for sharing this perspective! My daughter is pretty tiny - she's 18, and not quite 5', so it sounds like that bigger goats might be a handful for her. And one that is not a super heavy producer might be okay. I've heard a lot about what the goats eat affecting the milk. It sounds...

New to Goats - few questions

It seems as though there are as many preferences to taste as breeds! A dislike for Togg milk seems to be pretty universal though! I wouldn't have even thought about tasting the specific goat's milk. Thank you so much for that point! I will definitely remember that. I wondered about...

New to Goats - few questions

I am really looking for and hoping to find an experienced goat already in milk. We aren't looking for bargain basement pricing - but we are on a budget, so I'm hoping that it will be enough for a couple of quality animals.

New to Goats - few questions

Thank you for this information. Sounds like we need to do some milk tasting from the different breeds, somehow and yes, we're planning on a couple of them and would ideally have their breeding off set enough to keep milk all year.

New to Goats - few questions

Good to know. My daughter would like a pygmy. I can see we're going to have to do some research and find a way to taste some milk. :)

    Pygmy Goats for meat

Thank you for such a quick reply! It does give me at least an idea. It seems difficult to find information about goats, beyond Boer for meat. We haven't eaten goat before, but we're looking for self sufficiency and planning to make some changes in our eating habits to accommodate that!

    Pygmy Goats for meat

Thank you for this! I had no idea that pygmy goats were more than pets. We have limited space and funds and I would really like to have dairy goats for our family as well as raise meat goats. We are going for self sufficiency. About how many pounds of meat does a pygmy yield? About how long...

New to Goats - few questions

Thank you so much for this information! This is very helpful. I didnt realize that wethering bucks from dairy goats yielded good meat. That would definitely be better than yet another breed! :)

New to Goats - few questions

Hello! We moved in July to a wonderful property that we are renting. Previous renters had basically trashed the place. We have the human dwelling habitable and are now working on the barn. We will be looking to get some milk goats in late February/early March. We are,at least for this...

Goat Horns & Some Other Questions

Thank you so much for this reply! This is tremendously helpful to me as we consider our options. I'll definitely be checking out the goat articles to glean from the wisdom there too.

Goat Horns & Some Other Questions

Good morning! We are new to goats and I am trying to gather all of the information that I can before we get them. We may be inheriting a Nigerian buck who still has his horns. He also has 2 kids whom we may be inheriting and I do not know if they have horns or not. My first question is - can...

    Hello from Kansas

Thank you so much for this advice! I had read just recently that goats needed to be castrated between 8-12 weeks. It sounds like maybe that is not true! If that is not the case, we will definitely be doing that first thing. I didn't really think about meat goats, I've never had goat meat. I...

    Hello from Kansas

Hello! I've been lurking around here for a few days now and reading through various threads. We are currently living in the city of Wichita and within the next 6 weeks (provided everything goes smoothly) will be moving to more north east Kansas to a 3 acre farm that we will be renting. This...
