    Raspy cough....

They were supposed to be dewormed when we got them. I need to ask what dewormer they used though. The pigs we got last year had obvious signs of worms and their cough instantly went away when I dewormed them.

    Raspy cough....

We bought 6 5 weeks old pigs 11 days ago and now some of them have developed a couple of symptoms that are concerning me. A couple of them have a raspy cough (just sporadic,) a little discharge from the nose when they sneeze and last, when I check on them in the morning some of them have their...

    Stinky.....

The vet said to just keep it clean with iodine and make sure it doesn't get any worse. I definitely like the short time it's taken for it to almost fall off completely. It's taken half the time as the other banders we've used.

    Stinky.....

Looks just like the one our vet used. I was amazed at how tight me made it. He just kept tightening and tightening and tightening :hide

    Stinky.....

Going to put a call into the vet on Monday. The bander he used really put the squeeze on them. He said someone came up with design after no one could find a bander that would fit a 2000lb bull. Nothing compared to the bander I got from Jeffer's. I'm sure glad we had it done before fly season...

    Stinky.....

The vet came out and banded our 800lb bull about 3 weeks ago. I noticed yesterday when I went out to pet him that his nuts smell bad...Like a stinky abscess. They look like any other banding we've done here, except they smell. I sprayed some iodine where the raw spots are. Nothings oozing or...

Do you keep pigs with other livestock?

I do not recommend keeping other animals with pigs. They have different needs as other animals and can be very distructive. I've had friends whose pigs have killed their chickens and goats. Our pigs have never killed any of our chickens who sneak in the pigs pasture but I would never knowingly...

Just a little tidbit from a lost BYCer...

I personally would want to be there if it were my animal. We had to put down our 36yr old mare and I was the only one with her besides the vet. We had a neighbor come dig a hole, then we brought her next to the hole and the vet gave her the injections. It was peaceful. That was 15 yrs ago. Now...

    Diarrhea....tired of it!

At one point it was literally shooting out of his rear when he first got here. So far so good now. His rear has been dry and poop free for a while. These boys weren't in the best condition when they got here so it's taken them some time to get them "right." I've done the rubbing the rear...

    Diarrhea....tired of it!

I gave him probios. I'm very careful when it comes to their rumens. His fecal was good. I ended up cutting back on his grain and his stool has been fine since. His rearend is another story. He doesn't lift his tail up enough so he's always poopy. Of course I'm a good mommy and wash his rear...

Keeping our pony with our cows and goats

Thanks ya'll. I let the goats run around in the pasture with her while I was out there and she was being a big turd. The next day I let one of our big calves in with her and she ran away like crazy. It'll be a slow process I'm sure. My biggest worry was the minerals though.

Keeping our pony with our cows and goats

We got our daughters a mini shetland mare for Christmas. What I'm wondering is if it's okay to pasture her with our cows and goats? Are the goat/cow mineral blocks okay for horses? I feed our goats loose minerals but can put them up high where only the goats can get to them. I have her in...

    Diarrhea....tired of it!

We got a couple of bull calves ( Chip and Dale) back in July 2011. I dewormed and banded them when they got here. The smallest of the 2 has always had diarrhea off and on. I thought that maybe it was because of the switch in feed but his brother has had no symptoms. Dale's backside is constantly...

    Majorly BUMMED.

I'm sorry to hear about your results :hugs I know what it's like to get positive results when I'd hoped I'd get negatives. I bought 3 does last summer and tested them all for CAE/CL and Johnes. One of the girls was positive for Johnes. Thankfully I quarantined them and we ended up putting...

    How much land for miniatures?

I have a customer who wants to give us 2 minatures...a heifer and a steer :) What I'm wondering is how much land would I need to fence in for them? They wouldn't have any pasture to graze on because the area I have to fence is more trees and bushes.
