Pearce Pastures Spring 2015 Kidding Thread: BLUEBELL is in LABOR!

It's so sad when they don't make it. One of my does had three but only one survived, I really think she was missing the others for the first few days. She seems good now and the little doe is fine too. She was in labour for a few days, I had the vet out after the first day, contractions and...

    TIA KIDDED- UPDATE

So, the kids are a week old, the little buckling is much bigger, but I'm worried that Tia isn't feeding them!! They seen to always be chasing her, and trying to nurse, and the little girl especially cries. So tonight I thawed some milk and filled a Pepsi bottle and went out to see if I could...

    TIA KIDDED- UPDATE

Hi All, I don't post much but I do know how much we all like pictures. Tia a Mini Silky Fainter, bred to Felix, an ND kidded twins yesterday morning. I missed it by "that" much. They were up, but not dry when I went out and nursing very quickly. One of each, the brown is the buckling, he as...

    Horns? Dis-bud? Polled?

So many things to consider. Having just lost a fine buck to complications of anesthesia while being de-horned, I will never again have a goat that hasn't been disbudded when a baby. I don't do it myself, but take them to a friend who is excellent at it. I know it hurts them, how could it not...

    R.I.P. CAPTAIN MORGAN

I just want to cry, my beautiful Mini Silky Fainter buck Captain Morgan did not make it through his horn removal surgery. I know there are many views on taking the horns off an adult, but he was getting so mean with them, so dangerous to all around him that I made the decision. It was the...

Is it ok to wether an adult buck?

Oh for sure the vet will be doing it. And he is already such a lovey boy, still would get on my lap if I would let him. A bit less pee-ing and stink would be nice though.

Is it ok to wether an adult buck?

Has anyone done it. I'm sure I'll need the vet to do it, but just wondering if it has any effect on the buck, other than making it so he can run with the girls all the time and no worries. I don't want any more breeding happening but want to keep this guy since he is such a sweetheart.

    Nigerian/fainting goats inquiry.....

They'll be cute for sure. I have some of the same cross. Unlikely that they will be fainters though, that doesn't seem to carry through a cross. As for the banding, I have them done at about three months, you don't want them to get so big that the band doesn't fit.

    Mastitis and Udder loss

A quick update,, she has dropped the udder, just a small wound left, and it is healing up nicely. It happened while we were away over Christmas, so don't know where it ended up, not anywhere obvious that I could see it and get rid of it but the doe is totally back to her normal bossy self...

    Mastitis and Udder loss

The milker has a hand pump with a pressure gauge, then the "teat cup" was from a large syringe, connected with plastic tubing to the top of the mason jar, so you fit the cup over the teat and just pump. I always wash the udder first with a soap/bleach/warm water solution and again after...

    Mastitis and Udder loss

Wow, just read BlueMoon's thread, and yep, that's what is happening with Patsy. Vet says to leave it to come off on it's own, the weight of it is helping that process and then to just keep it clean till it heals up. It is certainly gross, but no smell thank heavens, that always gets me. Lucky...

Pets: Whether to get 2 wethers or wether and doeling?

I don't think anyone ever ends up with fewer goats than they started with. :-)

    Mastitis and Udder loss

Kind of a long story...ND doe kidded twins in September, nursed them with no problem, I milked her from the time they were two weeks old, twice a day after they left. Lots of milk. I use a hand pump suction milker, noticed decrease from left side, over two or three days, then nothing from that...

    Angora Goat Thread!!

These goats are gorgeous. How big does an Angora goat get? I have a Pygora, she is not very big at all and the rest of my herd is ND and Mini silky fainters. Do you shear the Angora or brush the fibre out? I just let my girl shed naturally and then clip it off her in the spring, but I don't...

    New Baby girl

For sure it can go on for a few weeks, but I never noticed that any of my girls discharge had a terrible smell. Might want to look into that as it could be an infection.

    Taking the plunge.

Can't beat the Nigerian Dwarf for personality, size and milk production. Just my opinion of course, and I admit I am biased.
