First Katahdin lamb might arrive today

I noticed one of my ewes was getting a nice udder on Saturday. This morning, her belly was lower and she was hollow in front of her hips. Today might be the day! I did move the LGDs out of that pasture....I don't think they are mature enough to handle lambing correctly yet.

    Another hurdle crossed

I have two breeds of sheep....katahdins and barbados blackbelly sheep. With the exception of two of the adult blackbellies, none of these sheep had been around LGDs. I finally had to separate the two breeds because the flighty blackbellies were keeping all of the sheep in an uproar about the...

    Look what followed me home!

I did not plan this. Well, not this soon anyway. I have two male Anatolians that are soon going to be 10 months old. So I started looking for a female pup, to be born later this year. I discovered this very small litter a few hours from me. The owner had heart surgery and could not care for...

Little ram is very sad tonight.

My first little lamb was born in early October. He was spending a good bit of time grazing on his own lately and when he does nurse, he nearly knocks his mother off of her feet. so today was the day he moved out of her pen. Poor little guy is so sad! He is now living with a wether and a ram...

Dexter calves....should I get one or both of them?

I was thinking about buying a heifer calf, 3 months old and weaned. She's $600. I want a tame cow, not a wild one so I'd rather buy her young and raise her. She is a registered Dexter. But then I got to thinking about how on earth I'd get her bred when the time comes. So the breeder offered...

I think my very first lambs will be here soon! update....lamb is here!

Anabelle is a Barbados Blackbelly Ewe, 18 months old. I had the breeder put her in with a ram for around 6 weeks prior to picking her up. Based on the dates she was with the ram, her due date was anywhere between 9/15 and 11/23. Blackbellies are not known for getting a large udder, but she...

    Red Cell Dosage for Sheep?

One of my sheep apparently has barber pole worms. I treated them all with Cydactin for the worms, but one has really pale eye lids so I think she needs some Red Cell. I can't find the dosage though. I did see that 3cc is good for goats, but will the copper in Red Cell hurt her? Any...

    Winter pasture advise

I live in South Carolina and need some winter pasture advise. The pastures will not be productive for much longer and I wish to plant some annual pasture in with the Coastal Bermuda that is already there. Alfalfa won't grow here. Should I plant wheat? Rye? turnips? Or what? Thanks so much...

My two Anatolian Shepherd pups are finally home

These pups are 11 weeks old and came to be from a woman in Missouri. she did a fantastic job socializing these pups and getting them off to the right start with livestock. They are both male, and are AKC registered. I plan to rotate them individually between the house and sheep (and chickens)...

Scored on some great hay today!!

We learned about this farm from a friend of a friend. they had hundreds of bales of good Coastal Bermuda hay left over from last year that they needed to clear out to make room for the new crop. It's been barn kept and is still nice and green. It was only $2 a bale!!! We got 120 bales and...

Will two rams hurt a ewe?

I want my sheep to stop being so terrified of me. I have 4 Katahdin lambs, 4 Barbados Black Belly lambs and two adult BB ewes. One of the ewe is 15 months old and is skittish, but the other ewe (Penny) is 3 years old and acts like a deer! She is so incredibally skittish around me. Penny is...

help me troubleshoot my electric fence please!

I am so glad this fence is only to protect my trees from my sheep because this fence is making me crazy. the charger is an older model Parmak low impedance 110 v AC charger. I have 3 ground rods, each 10' from the next. The charger works great some times, and then stops working later on. We...

This room looked a little bit empty so I thought I'd start a thread. So tell me....what kind of guardian does your herd/flock have? Are you happy with your choice? I have.....actually I almost have an Anatolian Shepherd. He's 12 days old so he can't come home for a while longer, but I am...

    damn dogs....

Not mine....my son's dog. He has this huge powerful scardy-cat pit bull that freaks out when it's storming and runs away. He usually comes to my house. He has torn up fences in the past, mated my pit bull when she was in heat (he's a pit bull too so that wasn't a huge problem). He can rip...

Why is it SO hard to find sheep around here!!

I already have Barbados Blackbelly sheep but I wanted to find a larger breed to cross with them. I first started searching for Dorpers. NO one has Dorper ewes for sale??? I found a few rams but not a single ewe anywhere in the state. OK....lets try Katahdins. I wanted pure but not necessarly...
