    Hills and Horses

What are you doing when you go down the hill? If you are pulling on her mouth, you are teaching her to be heavy on the forehand to go down that hill. You are teaching her to pull. Shaking her head, she is saying LET GO. Shake didn't work, so then she bucks. She is sending you a strong message...

A couple recent photos of "the gang"

You have some nice looking horses however a bit on the thin side, especially the 2 year old. It might be that they just need more food, good quality grass hay.

    Horse Troubles

How does she know she is suppose to stand still for you to mount? Have you done any ground work with her before you get on? Is she there with you mentally? Horses are fight or flight animals, they prefer to flee however. They are preyed upon, they need to feel they can trust you and you are...

Heifer calf with rabbit-like poo pellets?

No the mill is fine, I know someone who gets organic custom mixes from them, but not for cattle. But you are missing my whole point. You keep pushing grain grain grain...and grain is not necessary for beef cattle, and especially not as a new food for a calf with an upset system. Exactly...

Heifer calf with rabbit-like poo pellets?

I never said a calves stomach does not continue to change after the first 24 hrs, I stated "After the first 24 hrs a calves stomach changes". And you would never give a calf, or any animal, grain if you thought they was"compacting in her stomach" or impaction somewhere in their system. You...

Heifer calf with rabbit-like poo pellets?

Since this calf is a beef calf, who has always nursed from her mother, which is the MAJORITY of her diet, and she has an upset system, it makes absolutely no sense to me to feed her grain. If her system is upset from a dietary change, dont go further and change her diet more. The majority of her...

    Winter Highland photos

Their summer coat is much thinner than their winter coat. They sweat, lay in the shade and also pant. Two of our females have REALLY thick coats, long hair, and the younger one I hosed off last summer when it was in the 90's. But like you said, "few hot days", overall they do fine in the summer.

Nope, they dont mind. :) Only thing they care about is having plenty of food to eat, and they have that. The other day I was out scratching them and they are so warm under all that hair.

Week old calf trying to nurse on pregnant heifer...bad?

"We're really starting to "get" in what ways our setup is lacking for cattle management..but my brain is definitely starting to work up the possible changes we can (will have to) make " That's a farm ownership disease ya know.:D:P She is probably feeling blissful, if her udder is full, because...

Probably a really dumb question...water for nursing calves

We put in a smaller tank along with the big tank. We got it at Kipperts in tumwater. I dont remember the gallon size of it. All the cattle drink out of it so I have to fill it often, but I like the calves to have water at all times.

Week old calf trying to nurse on pregnant heifer...bad?

amy we had the same problem with Wellington, Nylas calf. Once he figured out how to nurse, he became a piggy and kept trying to nurse off Reba also. This was a few days before she gave birth. Pretty funny watching Reba try and run away since a wee calf was trying to chase her, and then Nyla...
