Will goats get used to train horns blowing nearby?

I need some help from someone experienced with trains and goats! If someone lives next to a railroad track and the trains go by regularly with horns blowing... will goats adjust to it or will they always freak out? Anyone?

    Mini Jersey breeding after calf

Hi all! I haven't been on here in ages due to a very busy life but I'm now new to cattle and have some learning to do! :) My mini jersey had a heifer calf in June this year. I am wanting to rebreed but she's nursing the calf and the bull is 1 1/2 hours away. The only sign that my cow has come...

    Mini Jersey questions

I have just gotten our first cow... heifer calf actually. She is a miniature Jersey and is 9 months old. I have llamas, goats, chickens and have had horses but she's my first cow. I generally do not give a lot of shots or medication for my animals unless it's necessary. I have no idea what...

    Mastistis - Today vs. Tomorrow?

I have a nine year old Nubian doe who apparently has mastitis on one side only of her udder. I've used Today on that side and it seem to clear up for a few weeks but she never got milk on that side. I'm milking her other side and getting 3/4 gallon a day from the good side. I felt a small...

    Belly button hernia?

I have a seven week old Nubian buckling. His belly button is sticking out... a lot. Maybe it's a type of hernia? I haven't seen this before in any of my goats. It's soft and doesn't seem to bother him at all. Is there anything I should do or just leave it?

Do you cut the end of a Pritchard nipple?

Probably a stupid question but this is the first time I've bottle fed babies... a friend gave me her unused Pritchard nipples (yellow with red tip). There doesn't appear to be a whole in the end am I supposed to cut an 'x' in the end or just cut off part of the end?

Kid not breathing at birth.. raspy now... momma has brown stuff coming

My Nubian doe just gave birth to twins. I got out to the barn and found a doeling wet but doing well; the buckling was still in the sac and not breathing. I broke open the sack and got his head/nose clear. Nothing. I gave him mouth to nose/mouth and he finally took a breath. I've held him...

Denver is becoming even more 'farm' friendly...

I hope other cities around the country follow their lead as they allow people to become more self sufficient in a huge city's limits. http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/28306885/detail.html

Her teats got smaller this year?

There's always something new to learn with animals. One of the (several) things this year, that I've not experienced before, is having one of my best milk goats teats actually be smaller this year after freshening than any of her past years (this is her third freshening). She's an Alpine. I...

How long after banding can he rejoin the girls?

I banded my Nubian buckling. I have Nigis (who come into heat every month and I don't want them bred by a Nubian). How long do I need to continue to keep him separated from the girls to make absolutely 100% sure that he cannot breed any of them?

"Goaty" milk - any experienced milkers with ideas?

I've been milking goats for almost two years so I do have experience with the 'normal' issues. This is new for me.. my Alpine doe's milk is off flavor this year. It is the typical goaty flavor but not real strong... just enough that it is very noticeable and we'd rather not drink it. I'm...

Ahhh.... it's a skunk! Goat and chicken question for you.

My dog had a run in with a skunk the other night. That's not my Ahhhhh! It appears that the skunk is living under our chicken coop (found a freshly dug hole). The chickens are completely safe so that's also not the issue. The issue is that there is also fresh skunk poo in the barn... so...
