Buckling didn't make it... Now what?

I came to the barn this morning to find my doe giving birth. It quickly became evident that her baby was stuck with one front leg still inside. She had clearly been trying to push for awhile, as the buckling had dirt on his face like she had laid down. Long story short, we got him out, but he...

    Hi! A quick question

I highly doubt that I know any more about donkeys than you, but I see that this has been here for a while with no replies. I can answer a few of your questions just by reading some of the threads on here. Donkeys get fat pretty easily, so usually it is not required for them to have any sort of...

    Farm Name Suggestions

Hey everyone... I was just thinking that our farm needs a name, but I am having a hard time coming up with something really good. Any suggestions? Here are some facts about our farm if they could help: -We have 2 horses -Lots of chickens -2 Dogs -2 Cats -House is OLD (like early 1800's) -20...

    Vaccination Schedule?

Personally, my horses just get vaccinated once per year. We do bare minimums here, as my horses don't go to any shows. The only horses that they come into contact with are a friend's horses, who do get vaccinated. Therefore, my horses get ONLY Rabies and Tetanus shots. Just to be safe, because...

    horse bit my mom???

I agree with BunnyLady. This is a disrespect issue where your mom has to discipline her. Do as stated above, but I am going to add that when you are going to discipline them don't be afraid to pop them on the end of the nose. Not hard, just enough to get your point across... Or, if you don't...

    Trimming the hooves

I have a farrier out to do it. I do have a rasp to take off the ends, or fix a small crack, but I am scared to do a whole trim myself. I am afraid that I would make one of them go lame. For me, it is worth the cost to know that it is getting done right. But, if you are trained by someone who...

    Haflingers or Friesians?

I agree 100% with what has been said. Friesians are known to be flashy carriage and dressage horses, and thus are very expensive. Haflingers sound much more practical for what you are looking for.... They are small enough to handle, and manage, but big enough to pull, and even ride. They are...

    Do you think he's improving?

Wow! He looks amazing! Good work! I think you have reached your goal! He looks like the perfect weight for a Thoroughbred, now just a little more muscle and he will be perfect!

What is your daily diet for your horses

I'll be first... I am in Maine. I have two horses, and they eat different stuff, so I will list them separately. My 8 year old STBD gelding (Yankee) is one Blue Seal Trotter (it has 14% protien, and 3% fat). Right now he is eating 1 1/2 qts of it, twice a day, but it usually goes up a bit in...

what breed do you think she is

Thoroughbred?? I think that she looks a lot like my Standardbred, but I guess that Standardbreds have some thoroughbred in their past, so that would make sense. See my avatar for a pic of my STBD...

New horse, possible signs of colic? Any advice would be welcome :)

Could be a diet change, or I have to add that it could be just her being her! Both of my horses have lots of gass (they will walk up, get loved on, then walk away farting, LOL). My gelding takes a nap (laying down) EVERY SINGLE morning! Same time every day! LOL Tummy noises are always good, too...

    how much food?

I never go by what people say is enough. You should evaluate (or give us pics so that we can evaluate) if your horses are thin or fat (or even just right). My horses get less than 1/5 of what the bag of feed says they need, and they look great! And they each get 1/2 a bale (a normal bale) of hay...

Geldings behavior is driving us crazy!

This is calm and cool (in pellet form) on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/OralX-Calm-and-Cool-Pellets/dp/B000MCZTCK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344967199&sr=8-1&keywords=calm+and+cool This is online, obviously, but you can probably buy them at a local grain store or TSC. IDK, though, you will just...

    Horse help!!

Yes, I would say get a lounge line (and you don't really need a round pen) and run her until you see her starting to lick and chew (a sign of submission) and dropping her head. It could take a while... But don't give in, it will only make her more stubborn next time!!
