    Teaching cattle to eat weeds

poison hemlock and water hemlock are different plants... poison hemlock is the one that is commonly confused with Queen Anne's Lace or Wild Carrot... fine lacey leaves, purple/red blotching or spots on the stems near the base. we see it in hedgerows, along fencelines, and in areas where the...

    Teaching cattle to eat weeds

try your extension office... the missouri state university extension office has great info online on what's poisonous and what's not, and what might be (like johnsongrass) under some conditions. if your extension office doesn't have info on line, call 'em, they often have a pastures / grazing /...

Can coyotes jump a 4 ft fence?

I've heard mixed reviews on the man-pee thing... some folks get good results, others, not so much. one friend said he carefully marked his fence and then spent a couple of nights out well into dark just to see what he could see... what he saw was the coyote marking right on top of it! not...

    Rescue goat hoof issues! HELP!

that matches my experience as well... gauze under the vetwrap if there's any exposed skin. we do sometimes use it without gauze if there's no exposed wound or skin (for pressure wrapping) but it can pull hair.

    Rescue goat hoof issues! HELP!

here's another thought... you might try honey... there's good evidence that it promotes healing, actually speeds it up, and it's antibiotic, antifungal, and keeps the growing edge of the flesh moist but not wet. It's being used as a dressing for wounds with antibiotic resistant bacteria as it...

    just one ear?

hm. well either way it's not from petting them... we don't handle them a lot for petting, mostly just for cage cleaning and wellness checking... this one was on my potential breeder list out of this litter, but this 1-ear trick may let it out of that group.

    just one ear?

ok, so one of my kits from my first 2 litters had an ear fall over two days ago and it's still flopped... he's the only one of 12 kits (two different does, same dad) with a floppy ear, and it's just one ear. he'll be 6 weeks tomorrow... so... these are new zealand crosses, is this likely to...

magic rabbits? not not the magician kind... the breeding kind!

that seems like a useful survival strategy... kinda gross, but useful. checked the nest boxes and we're still good... 8 and 10 kits, all alive and wiggly! so far, so good. the mamas are eating well, and neither look thin, so I think we probably going to be ok on this one, even if it wasn't...

magic rabbits? not not the magician kind... the breeding kind!

ok, the delayed implantation thing makes sense - the new litters are right on the 30 day mark from the previous litters so that would fit with max-rabbit breeding cycle. as of this morning, both litters seemed to be fine, moving around in their fluff nests although I didn't peek... I'll check...

magic rabbits? not not the magician kind... the breeding kind!

well definitely not planned... so can they deliver one horn of kits while retaining the kits on the other horn? because that's the only way this makes sense... plus a 36 day gestation. and in the new litters I've got 8 in one and 10 in the other... can they carry 10 kits in one horn of the uterus?

magic rabbits? not not the magician kind... the breeding kind!

So, I've got a pair of does that I bought 1/10/2012 here's the timeline: 1/10/2012 bought does and buck (in together) 1/28/2012 separated buck (ok, it took me that long to get cages sorted out) 2/5/2012 Does kindled 2/25/2012 rebred 3/5/2012 Does Kindled :ep -- 36 days after oldest breeding...

dead kit... thoughts on what happened?

CrabbyRabbit has 6 kits Calico and BlackBunnie are sharing a cage, there were 2 dead newborns, and 5 HUGE kits, one of which was dead this morning... I didn't get a photo of the dead kit, here are some photos from a week ago when the kits were quite a bit smaller, they're twice this size now...

dead kit... thoughts on what happened?

so here's what I've got: NZ cross rabbits. in one cage, one doe with 6 kits, 19 days old, weighing about 10.5 oz each in another cage, two does with 5 kits 18 days old, weighting about 16 oz each... ok, my fault for not getting these does separated in time, but I think they kindled in the...

    vienna mark or bad dutch?

thank you that's helpful info. the doe with the snip has a 1/8" wide white line from her nose to her lip, not quite right down the middle (none on the bridge between the nose and top of her head). If I wanted to test for the vienna gene, should I be looking for a vienna-gene-candidate buck to...

    what price should i charge

that depends on state and local law, federal doesn't require it be slaughtered in an inspected facility - here in MO I can slaughter in my barn if I want to, just above a certain production amount I have to keep track of who I sell to. Farm sale/slaughter of rabbits is not regulated, provided...

    Selling meat

I think MO is similar to this but the numbers differ, here I think it's based on sales, not headcount. however selling *pet* rabbits does have a federal headcount limit before you have to be licensed - that's been in the news alot lately because there's a guy not far from me who'd fighting a...

    Market for meat rabbits?

so I'm interested in how you're developing your market? I'm in southwest Missouri, and I'm not sure I see the market here yet... but I'm looking for ideas. how many do you think you can sell a month in your area?
