    proper weaning of Alpaca Crias

It depends a lot on the individual mom & cria. How is the mom behaving towards her cria? Is the cria independent or clingy? I have a whole list of criteria which is too long to go into here. Usually, if the cria is over 60lbs, eating hay & grain, drinking water, and mom is sick of the cria...

Colic? Blindness? Something Else? (VET UPDATE!)

http://www.llamadocherbs.com/id3.htm I've seen an impaction colic and gas colic and ulcers twice. Current research has shown that gastroguard isn't effective in treating ulcers, though sucralfate is.

Colic? Blindness? Something Else? (VET UPDATE!)

Dr Pollard has a joint/tendon repair mix made especially for camelids. It is pricey, but it might be worth it. I haven't used it, but I have used his lactation and immune mixes.

    Fiber

I can get anywhere from 2-4+ pounds usable fiber per alpaca. I get anywhere from 10-30 skeins of 110 yard sport weight yarn per alpaca. If you're looking into getting fiber alpacas, keep in mind that they are herd animals so you'd need at least 3 for them to be happy. 2 is ok, but 3 is better.

Any suggestions on where to find affordable alpacas in Texas?

I'm in Maine, and I have some very nice fiber alpacas. I have an 18 micron fawn gelding for $500, plus some other very nice young alpacas that could sell for $500 each as fiber animals, with the option to upgrade to breeding status. Our website is http://chf1752.com

Colic? Blindness? Something Else? (VET UPDATE!)

Regular B complex may not have enough thiamine. B Complex Plus is what you want, since it has a higher amount of thiamine.

    Can Llamas eat Whole Oats?

I've never heard this about oats. There are several posts on the AlpacaNation forum about feeding oats that don't mention this. One of the breeders I bought my alpacas from, who's been in the business for many years, recommends feeding crimped oats to high maintenance females & males. My vet...

    Haflingers & Fat Deposits?

When my Haflinger was younger & working, she had a very cresty neck that was all muscle. Not at all fat. Now that she's retired, she's lost the crest of muscle she had. Because my mare is nearly 21 and worked very hard when she was younger, she does have arthritis and difficulty keeping weight...

liver fluke & barber pole worm

Northern Idaho, within 100 miles of the Canadian border. Just found my answers to the testing information in 2 issues of Alpacas Magazine. Test for liver flukes is serum ELISA done at Oregon State or Colorado State. Oregon State does a special fecal that can find the barber pole worm.

liver fluke & barber pole worm

We're getting a new stud from out west, and I was wondering what the prevalence of these 2 parasites are out there. He's coming from Idaho, but the transporter will be picking up alpacas from other farms & states. Regardless, he'll be in quarantine for at least 30 days, but I'd like to know if...

Dr Evans' Alpaca Field Manual - 3rd Edition

You're welcome! I have an extensive list of other good books. Dr Anderson's "Neonatal Care for Camelids" is my favorite of the 2 neonatal care books. If you aren't breeding, you don't need this. 2 really good books about the history of alpacas in South American & North America are Mike...

    U-Gard Ulcer Care Supplement

We've had good luck with gastroguard once a day and sucralfate twice a day for 30 days. It looks like U-gard is a supplement for horses, which have different digestive anatomy than alpacas. The generic name for gastroguard is omeprazole. Two other medications which work for ulcers are...

How are your animals are vaccinated?

Regarding vaccinations, the best person to ask is a veterinarian in your area who is familiar with camelids. It seems to be standard protocol to vaccinate with CDT & Rabies vaccines. Crias get their first CDT at at least 3 weeks old, and then at least 21 days later. Rabies I think is first at...

How do you prefer to feed grain to multiple alpacas?

I have multiple areas in my barn for feeding. I usually have 1 or 2 more buckets in the feeding area than there are alpacas, so no one gets left out. I herd them out of the area where they'll get fed, and then I close the door. Once I've put the buckets out, with a couple feet of space between...

What can you do with non-breeding alpacas?

Horses are big enough to accidentally kill an alpaca, and goats can carry diseases that can kill alpacas. Sheep & cows aren't a good idea either. Johne's diease, Caseous lymphadenitis & BVD are the 3 diseases of concern. I know of an alpaca farm that was completely wiped out when they bought...

    herd management software

I was wondering if anyone knows of any good herd management software programs that are easy to use and can be used for multiple species. I've tried several of the alpaca-specific programs out there and haven't had any luck with any of them. Needs to be: -easy to use -have good customer...

    Wormer?

Deworming should only be done if problematic or high levels of parasites are found on a fecal. Doing otherwise can lead to parasites becoming resistant to those dewormers we have. The only wormer that is given routinely is Ivomec, and that's only if you're in an area with high meningeal worm...

    watching pregnant girls

I was just wondering what is an appropriate frequency to check on girls that are due soon. With our first birth, we were checking every hour during the day, but managed to miss the birth & delivery of the placenta. Luckily, everything went well. Currently, I'm checking on the next girl due...

    Cria with nasal discharge. Help?

Does she have a fever at all? If she's acting normal with a normal temp & gaining weight well, then I wouldn't think she's sick. Maybe she has allergies? I've seen white nasal discharge with both of my ponies when there's a lot of pollen in the air. I haven't seen it with the alpacas, though.
