getting closer to getting a couple of pigs. at the moment leaning toward kune kune because they can reportedly thrive on pasture alone. not knowing the nutritional strength of my pasture, i'm wondering if there are physical signs in a pig to say their nutrition is not adequate?
I think i'm going to be ready for pigs by early spring. it's just hubby & me. I thought I would get two weaners. my questions...
1. do I get them just as they are weaned? I want to know what their diet has been & their living conditions
2. do I keep them till a specific age (what would that...
the other forum pages consistently have new posts. i eagerly look for new pig posts to read ( i hope to have pigs one day). days, many days go by & no one says anything. so much to learn & nobody's talking.
I've never killed an animal & I will be trying soon, starting on a rooster. I have a good place to work, but it would be where the animals range. does this make them more skittish to be around you? same question applies for goats. if they saw me kill one & process - would they fear me then...
I've overdone it & my girls are paying the price. I thought I had kept it to a manageable pace for introducing the pellets but they have developed diarrhea. I've got minerals available, baking soda & I am backing off the pellets. how else can I help them?
mine are meat goats & I use them for brush control. I need to thin my herd & am considering harvesting some of them. I've never done it & am looking for a place where people talk about such things.
thanks
for the first time I saw today one of my girls had cactus spines in her ears & under her chin. do I need to pen her down & remove them? do they rub them out? (my girls always rub a lot), or do I need to take action?
thanks.
i'm new to the pellets. I've been giving them pretty short rations of alfalfa pellets. i'm always afraid of letting them have much of anything. they're fine & fit now, but winter is coming & the forage is getting thin. do I just dump the alfalfa & let them have at it - or do it ration it...
I've started introducing them to the pellets in anticipation of winter. they seem to like it too much. I'm afraid to put it out free choice. I don't know how to find the balance for feed. so far they have been pretty much foraging & I give the eight of them one scoop of feed when I lock them...
I live in north central Texas. my girls are changing their coats. it's just amazing to watch. here it is, still reaching 90 during the day & these girls are building up their coats. they must know something I don't. it might be one of those winters.
we harvested rolls of mixed grasses hay this summer. they're not moldy and don't have thorns or toxic plants in it. how else do I determine if it is of a quality to be good for my girls? thanks
I saw on the tv show 'The Incredible Dr. Pol', which is about a vet in Michigan that he swears by copper sulfate as a wound treatment to dry up wounds & aide healing. do you keep it on hand? I saw a big one gallon container the other day (bigger than I would ever use) for $85 dollars. :ep
I live in hot dry Texas. my goats forage. it's been raining for two days now (very unusual). the little girls seem to think they are going to melt if they get out in the rain. I know they're hungry, but i'm afraid to feed them the grain (noble goat feed) for fear they will bloat. they're...
I see pictures y'all have of stands that allow the goat to put it's head through, you have feed or something as goodie & lock the head in place. don't you have to worry about the goat stepping sideways & stepping off the platform & injuring it's neck or worse?
i'm trying to figure out how to...
this is the same goat I've talked about recently. when I cleaned her wounds today three maggots came out. I understand they will eat the dead flesh, but will they then move into healthy flesh? I don't really know how to determine what is good "maggot therapy" and what is harmful to her.
this goat was injured by my dog about a month ago. I thought she would die, but she pulled through. two days ago I noticed her flank was crusted w/what looked like dirt. I couldn't see or feel any drainage & thought she laid in something wet. I washed her off real good & noticed smell. the...
the man I bought my goats from said they were vaccinated. I failed to get dates & I can't get him now. will it hurt them to get a c&d booster? they've been suffering w/worm problems but I think we're past that.
I got 8 goats for 3 1/2 acres of very dense brush/trees/briars about 2 or 3 months ago. I am shocked at how much they have cleared. I underestimated their clearing abilities. I need to pare my numbers down. do I just post on craig's list? i'm embarrassed to say i'm kinda attached to them...
I have been giving my goats medications for worms & cocci. I have tried to be careful when administering that their head isn't tipped back, but rather forward or flat. today, i'm noticing one goat I can hear her breathing and two goats are coughing. once quite a bit. i'm very concerned I may...
