Sort of. Most abscesses grow for a few weeks, then the hair on it falls off, then it ruptures. Usually the time frame is around a month, but every goat is different.
Goats may get abscesses from injections, injuries, insect bites, etc. There are common places for a CL abscess to appear (google...
"Dreaded CL"?
You mean, that pain in the neck skin disease that allows goats to live their lives just the same way they did before an abscess popped up?
Vaccinate the others, keep the abscess clean, and maybe you'll never have to deal with it again. If you do, lance it, drain it, wrap it...
Everyone is well!
It was hairy for a few days as mom went off feed, and stumbled even more. Treated for possible retained placenta and respiratory infection and also hypocalcemia due to the stumbling. She's 90% better now with just a bit of trouble getting up on the stand. Discharge is gone...
She has free choice hay, minerals, and gets grain as a treat. Her body condition looks fantastic. She is not fat, but definitely looks plump even after kidding.
I have a 2 year old doe who just freshened yesterday morning with twins. The kids are doing well. Mom is not exactly herself.
She didn't pay much attention to the kids when they were born. The first kid was lying on the ground behind her and she didn't even turn around to clean it. Thankfully...
I have a doe with the same problem. Two years in a row now, she has kidded and nursed kids just fine with one side. The other side fills, then the body reabsorbs the milk. The scar tissue prevents me from infusing her, so yours will probably be the same. Let her body do what it will, and just...
I think I can allow the doe and her doeling to come out of the kidding stall today. I will take the skinny lady down and give her some extra treats there, too. She had a lovely snack of oats, raisins, spirulina, molasses, wheat cereal, Vit B, and calcium tablets yesterday. She's definitely not...
The one who is nursing is nearly a year old! Do they make bitter apple spray for goat teats?! I'm going to try to tape the teats again because the only place to separate them is already in use by another doe and her newborn doeling.
Oh, forgot that I did that today. Her appetite is great; she even fights the other does for feed.
I don't have a farm vet nearby. Since I can't use Valbazen, should I try Safegard (haven't seen any tapes) or Cydectin?
A doe of mine was perfectly fine up until a few weeks ago.
During that bitter cold snap a few weeks ago, she stayed back in the barn while the others went out to eat hay. When I went to check on her, she had a runny nose and was just not herself. The next day, she was hiding in the basement of...
There are few meat herds where CL is NOT present. It's extremely common because it doesn't matter to meat producers. It's a skin disease that gets trimmed off with the hide. If it's internal, then, yes, the carcass is no good.
I'm glad that at least you are putting her to good use. So many...
Totally been there!!
Been fighting CL in my small herd since taking in a charity case bottle baby. Five adults have it, and the two yearlings were vax'ed at 12 weeks and have had none pop up.
Initially I flipped my lid, thought I was a horrible person and goat owner. I euthanized one because...
It sounds to me like ALL of this is fear based. He was probably not properly socialized as a pup and has irrational fears because of it. The bag is the perfect example. One of my mom's Pit Bulls is afraid of frozen hash browns. Yes, frozen hash browns. He will bark at them and try to retreat...
After about 2 weeks, all is healed.
The doe was euthanized the day after the bite. She showed no improvement after 4 days and was unable to chew or swallow at the end.
Valbazen.
I'm not sure what would happen to a pregnant goat who was dewormed with it, but I'd assume it would not be good. It very well could have been the Valbazen especially if it was given early on in pregnancy.
