    Bottle Fed Calf

I would keep an eye on both the cow and younger calf, but you should be fine. 3 months is rather young to wean a calf unless it is getting grain/calf starter. I never try to wean my bottle calves before 5 months and they still get grain when they are fully weaned and added to the herd.

    Cattle Squeeze Chute

You can use a head gate with out the squeeze chute, but you do have to have it attached to something solid, like 2 rail road ties buried 3'- 4' in the ground then you could make something out of your portable panels. I'm not sure about the weight capacity, it would be best to ask a company rep...

    Cattle Squeeze Chute

I agree they are not the same as a squeeze chute, but it sounded like cjc did not have all the facility's for working cattle. If you don't have the crowding tubs and alleys to get the cows to the chute, then the maternity pen works well for a small herd of easy to work cows.

    Cattle Squeeze Chute

cjc, where about are you. Around here that would be called maternity pen. They are very useful and if it has the self catching head gate one person can work the cows. Here you can get them at most farm/ranch supply stores for around $2500. I would say check around and look at other brands also.

Picture Of The Week (POW) Information & Submissions

Thanks, I'll have to give Baby Squirt a hug and tell her she's a winner, of course I think she is a winer all the time. She is my rescue baby, long story, but she would have been dead in a matter of days if I hadn't taken her and that was her first time ever outside.

Suggestions for first time with newborn calf

A calf will need a full gallon of colostrum within the first 12-24 hours. You should make sure you have the powdered colostrum replacer on hand if you can't get actual cow colostrum. There is a difference between the colostrum replacer and the colostrum supplement.

    Rabbit Colony in danger

What I did when I was having hawks take my chickens, is zig zag used bale twine across the top. I put mine about 6" apart , and it takes alot of time and twine, but there have been no more loss from hawks or owls. If it's something jumping in and out (thinking bobcat) this won't do much and you...

Help Please! Cow and Calf Problem!

Many times a mother cow will not accept one twin, they get busy having the 2nd calf and just sort of forget they had the first one. The calf is going to try to suck and bond to any cow he can, if the heifer sniffed or licked him at all the calf will not know she is not his mom. My guess is the...

thinking of buying a dairy calf

Jersey/Angus or Jeresy /Hereford make great family milk cows, they do well on grass with little or no grain, they tend not to have the medibolic issues many of the pure dairy cows have, most produce a good 2-3 gallons twice daily, and when bred back to a beef bull you get a nice beefy calf for...

    MY JERSEY

I wouldn't get in too big of a hurry to get extra calves for her till you know how much milk she has. Most of the time if they come from a dairy the reason they are sold is because they are low producers, and thats not always bad, you just don't want to get too many calves that she can't feed...

    Bottle Baby Advice Needed!

If she still wants to suck when done with the bottle, put some calf starter in her mouth and let her get a taste of it. I just let them suck on the heel of my hand and trickle the feed into their mouth it'll take a few days, but she will start eating it, I just leave a bucket of starter in the...
