    First LGD puppies!!!

Our 1 1/2 year old female Great Pyrenees had her first litter Sunday (Mothers Day). This was her 3rd heat, but for some reason never took the first 2. She has 10, yes 10 healthy fullblood pyrenees puppies. 7 females and 3 males! I thought that was an EXTREMELLY high number for first litter...

    Wheat free feed

Might be a little off topic, but my wife has celiac as well. Diagnosed 9 years ago... Why are you looking to feed a gluten free diet? The gluten CAN'T be passed on through the meat...... We enjoy our chicken, beef, lamb, venison, all of which eat wheat either growing (deer) or in our misc. feed...

    Compare and Contrast Heritage Breeds?

I've been reading and reading... then reading some more, and I've decided on the LBH as the next animal to add to my lil' hobby farm. I plan on getting a breeding pair, then from there raise my own pork, sell a few here and there. What sold me on them is docile behavior mainly, next is simply...

    Will they wreck my field?

I believe I'd brushog it.... Then spray with 2, 4D, or similiar herbicide... One that is only meant for broadleaf weeds/saplings/brush etc..... Why spray Roundup and kill all your rye, fescue, bermuba etc???

    Fenceing Tips and Tricks

For the rolled fence.... We staple it to the post at your starting point... Unroll the whole thing to the end... Nail together 2 2x4's or 2 2x6's (cut to 48" tall) with the fence inbetween the boards. Then attach chain or strapping to bottom and top of board. Attach come -a- long or fence puller...

    Black belly sheep

I "HAD" a ram, and still have 2 ewes and some of their Katahdin X babies.... They started off flighty, but spend time in their pasture, feed them "treats" (Mine LOVE animal crackers) and they will settle down.... My 3 year old ewes are just as gentle as my katahdin ewes... The ram was bottle...

Do ya'll let your Katahdin sheep ween there lambs themselves or not?

About the same here.... But I believe each situation is different... Had coyotes kill week old twins... Ewe accidently bred back within 2 weeks... She had 4th of July twins again... I pulled them off a little early than normal because our Oklahoma heat and drought was taking a toll on her body...

    Feeding in Winter

We usually have our own alfalfa we feed in winter only. Pasture only all summer. We've had to let our alfalfa sit out past 3 years and have been rotating that patch in corn/soybeans. I've been buying alfalfa from my neighbor since. I don't do any testing, and I've never heard of anyone in this...

wondering about how to set up fence...

Back when I had goats, they would jump and bulldoze any fence it seems.... My hair sheep now don't seem to even WANT to get out.... Even when my kids left the gate wide open for 1 1/2 days they never even got out!! My land is relatively flat except a few little "gopher hill sized" dips here and...

wondering about how to set up fence...

Every time I buy T-Post the clips come free, usually 5 per post. And, I've never put T-post every 5', usually I space 15' or so.... Of course I put the t-posts closer where I have small dips or hills....

Katahdin sheep shedding period, do they all shed at the same rate?

I'm in eastern Oklahoma. I have Katahdin and Barbado and their X breeds. Slowly going to transition to Dorper and Dorper Katahdin X as I like the bigger bodied sheep. I really only have 1 katahdin ewe that doesn't shed great. Last year she had the "mohawk" down her back, this year she has 2...

Katahdin sheep shedding period, do they all shed at the same rate?

It's not a good idea to move ANY livestock in extreme heat. Especially any distance. Not sure what your weather is like, but I'd suggest transporting early or late in the day. I prefer early so sheep get used to their surroundings before it's dark. As far as shedding, mine start Mid- February-...

    Breeding hair sheep

I have Katahdins and barbado and some X breeds of the 2. Soonest I've had was 7 weeks. But did have some go 5 months. Ram runs with them 24/7, and I don't seperate lambs when weining, just let mother nature do it!!
