I was trying to find out this information too. We used the shearers we got from my son's FFA teacher but they either have a dull blade or who knows. Then we went to the local store and bought Oster A5 Golden with the larger blade and got the FFA sheep done but on the Shetland and Shetland...
Rita, we are enjoying them. They are eating all our weeds really well. It took a while to get them used to staying in the electric fence. I have 2 of them trained to walk on lead ropes and two that still flop on their backs. Right now I do not need to move them on the lead so the training is...
It's a beautiful pasture and barn setup. Is your fence wood slats? My Lowline Angus has never challenged a fence but while she is eating with her head down she will just pop out the boards without knowing what she has done. I love the ease of putting up a couple electric wires and a solar...
We bought 4 of the Pelibuey sheep. I made the mistake of sending my husband and daughters to pick them up and instead of only bringing home ewes they brought home a little man also. I will see how he behaves as he ages...he may end up dinner.
In this picture they are with one of my...
So far our sheep have not eaten much fodder because we have always had grass for them to eat by moving around temporary fencing for them. I have cut my food bill in 1/2 by growing fodder. I am not growing enough for all the animals but my 3 turkeys are eating about 4 lbs a day + as much turkey...
I wouldn't hire my city slicker husband to look after any animals either! He is learning and working on it and he is being a great sport in our ranching adventure. We had quite a few discussions about proper care of new born calves. No more calves will be born until we get our Lowline breed...
You say it took a couple of hours to get him to nurse - did you guys help - if so then I wouldn't bother getting involved next time as Dexter calves need no help from us humans to nurse
Dexter's will all live very happily together and that steer would protect your little calf from coys or...
Our first Dexter calf was born this morning. He is doing well, he was walking within 1/2 an hour and it took a couple hours to get him nursing. We have a steer that wasn't castrated properly and has the build of a bull more than a steer. While our cow was giving birth and right after the...
Spring is here. My 4 sweet Shetland ewes are not keeping up with weed control. I am looking for inexpensive local sheep - perhaps meat so I can eat them IF I decide to breed. I found an add for Pelibuey Sheep they are a smaller breed and common in Mexico and South America. Any idea what...
What are you using for temparary fencing? I want to break up our pasture into smaller sections and if the cattle respect it enough I may send them to my neighbors to help maintain his pasture.
Thanks for your advice,
Kelly
I am hoping to get the fodder room going in the next couple weeks. I will be thankful to be able to produce more and get what I have out of the shower!
2 of my kids are thinking of getting lambs to take to fair - Working on it!
I am also hoping to add turkeys to our animal mix.
I'm about an hour north of you. We spent many nights patrolling the property shooting at coyotes after we lost 2 sheep. Right now my goal is to finish fencing the property and get a LGD. I have not done a lot of looking because we are not ready. Our ranchette is a money pit we have the sheep...
One thing that has changed in the past decade is the tremendous advances in heat synchronization. You can expect much better results with some of the newer protocols. Your vet should be able to advise you on the procedure.
Thank you JHM! All your information was wonderful. She is in heat...
We have 3 cows. 2 Dexters and one Lowline, the Dexters are (hopefully) bred and we want to breed the Lowline. We had considered purchasing a Dexter bull but I am not sure I am ready to own a bull. So now we are looking at having her AI. I am looking on the internet at semen and many of them...
