What do I do with all this fat?

We just had our pig butchered, but we did all the processing after that. I now have a lot of fat that I know is useable. Other than making lard, which I ddi with the leaf fat, what else should I do with this. I plan to use a little to add to my venison for sausage, but what else?

    Lump on doeling's tail….kind of gross picture….

I have a 3 week old bottle baby doeling that has this very big lump on her tail. It doesn't seem to hurt and it grows a little each day. Any ideas what it is and what I do for it? My herd is CAE/CL free…the buck and moms were all tested in Sept prior to breeding season.

    Bent front legs

I wish I had taken pictures….my doe that did not make it, had two out of her three kids with bent legs. One of the bucklings walked on the front side of the first joint( not the knee and I don't know what it's called) and the doeling walked on the outside of her front hooves. Both look so...

I am VERY new to this, but decided to take the plunge into heritage pigs. I am getting a gilt that is half American Guinea Hog and 1/2 Kune Kune. She looks like an AGH with a short turned up nose like the kune kune breed. I am also getting a 3/4 kune kune and 1/4 AGH boar and someday will...

    Pasture and alfalfa

So, I have a pasture with grass, acorns, etc that my goats graze on most of the day. I give them a small amount of alfalfa in the am and pull the pregnant ones onto the milk stand for some complete goat food and some TLC (rub down to get them ready for milking later). They also have a...

    LDG grooming checklist

I was just reading several other posts and soon realized that I may not be doing all the things I should with my LDG. I had no idea that the worming schedule is different for LDG's and have been following the same schedule as for my golden retriever. I looked for a grooming checklist, but...

    teary eyes

My son's LDG, a pyrenes, has teary eyes. They are not cloudy and do not seem to bug him. Here is the STRANGE part….he is letting one of the wethers lick his eyes! I have never seen anything like this. This dog LOVES to be touched, but this is wierd. Any ideas? Antibiotics? He has tried...

How to tell when young does are in heat…..

This is the first time in many years that I have not owned at least one buck. Silly me, I sold my bucks and then bought 2 does! I am having trouble telling when one of the does is in heat? I am pretty sure I missed it, even though I check at least once a day. No tail wagging, no loudness, no...

    Bought a couple new goats…..

I had finally sold all my bucks(need new lines for next year) and had sold several does making my total does freshening at a nice easier number of 6. I should know that when this happens, something wonderful will come up for sale :) I found a very nice registered purebred nubian doe and a...

    Older does for meat?

I have 3 older does that I just need gone. The problem is that they all have names and sweet faces. Has anyone butchered a 9 year old nubian doe? Is it doing to be nasty tasting? I don't want to butcher if it won't taste good. I would have to have someone else do the killing part, but I...

    LDG bites a neighbor dog

If my 10 month old lgd dog bites a neighbor dog that came into our yard through an opening in the fence, am I at fault? They insist our dog came on their property, but there are no signs that he could get through or dug under.

    Coccidia???

I was thinking that only goat kids could get coccidia, but I think my favorite doe had it. Past tense, because she died this morning. Ugg! She had diarrhea pretty badly last week. I treated her with Albon…correctly, and she seemed to improve somewhat. Yesterday she was off by herself, but...

    13 month old buck...

I have a buck that I would like to butcher that is 13 months. My question is…since he is not in rut and therefore not stinky, will he taste 'bucky"? If so, I may just sell him. It's definitely too late to castrate him, and I don't want to butcher him if he will taste like a buck. WE just...

    Spent grains/beer mash????

Has anyone on here fed their goats beer mash/spent grains? I just heard about this and I am really curious. I love the idea of using something that might be considered "waste", might be really good for my animals. I know it it must be used quickly so it does not spoil, but I am wondering if I...

    Nubian vs American Nubian

I am so very frustrated right now. I have seen the registration papers that say a couple of my goats are American Nubian, and I used an American Nubian to breed several of my does. I now find out that anything bred to an American Nubian is now an American Nubian. Apparently, they are inferior...

    New kids! And more kids!

Look at these beautiful kids that were born the other day! I am in love! What color do you think the grayish one will become? Grayish one is a buck and the black spotted one is a doe.

    Neutering ...

At what age do you recommend neutering a male LDG? I really want him fixed to alleviate his "looking for love" tendencies. I had my female spayed when she was just under 6 months, but have no idea with my male.

What and how much to feed my LDG 10 week old puppies...

I have read a lot of conflicting things online about what to feed my puppies and the quantity to feed them. I have two pyrenees male puppies who are just about 10 weeks old. One already weights 21 lbs and the other is 18 lbs. They are growing super fast, but I have read that it's not good for...
