    I think she will eventually start eating the grass more. Once she is eating grass and less grain her milk production will go down a bit too.

    Vet prices in your area.

    My dad had a heifer go for a c-section this spring. He brought it to the clinic so the vet didn't have to come to the farm...still cost nearly $500 (about an hours work) We're in SE Manitoba.

    Was she ever vaccinated for blackleg? I just read about winter tetany online, maybe could be that. Were you feeding minerals also?

    Hello, I just found backyardherds and joined today....I'm a young farmer in MB, raised on a small beef farm, now starting my own farm. I've got 2 horses, 2 cats, 2 dogs, 2 tamworth pigs, 23 hens, 90 chickens for butchering, 15 cows with calves, and 3 yearling heifers.

    How do I 'weigh' my steer??

    You could also get someone who is familiar with cattle to look at it/ or a picture of it and they would be able to guess. Some people are pretty good at it.

    I don't know much about training heifers to lead, but I know Sue at Ivyhillfarm (on facebook) has done it with her dexters. You could ask her.
